Software/firmware Updates - Is This For The Ecu And Other Electrical Mods?

Featured Replies

I have read somewhere in here and possibly elsewhere online that you can get software updates, which I presume are mainly ECU. And some people have said they either have had better fuel economy, lower emissions or even slightly more performance. Is this something to do with ford ETIS? I don't know anything about it really. But I've also read about ELM config software that can allow you to play with settings such as windows close when doors locked, alter time delay for interior lights to dim. The only info I could find was that some Russian people had developed software to alter the settings, and you can buy a device similar to an OBD scanner, modify it with a switch and then once you have the software on pc, can then alter settings. Sounds quite interesting, anyone on here tried it?

You can use elmconfig to make changes to the instrument cluster without any real bother, you get the TPWS, some eco stats, and a slightly improved readout on how many miles you have left, I believe the formula was reworked to be more accurate.

I'm reluctant to use ELMconfig on the PCM tho, I haven't been able to get clear answers of what one to use for my PCM and since this will stop your car from working if you bugger it up its not something to be messed with. Basically the ECU has both a hardware and software version, when it comes to remapping you can't just drop a map from one car to the next unless those hard/software versions match yours, whilst I mention maps its also important to know that any remap you have will be lost , I've been informed that the PCM files used with ELMconfig are actually just differential files, not full blown ROMs meaning you need to get the right one for your car.

In theory there are improvements with the PCM updates but I'm not sure its worth it.

If you can get a hold of ford IDS with a VCM2 interface then your laughing, but even clones of this will set you back over £100 quid.

etis will only display updates for Euro V cars, yours is a Euro IV, even if you did have access to the information on etis you will still need to have a VCM2 interface.

You can't use elmconfig add global windows without some further changes to door modules but there is a bunch of stuff you can sue it for, cruse control for one, double locking on a single click, various timings for lights, injector codes, all sorts really, but some of the changes like global windows and cruise control do require you to make physical hardware changes.

If you want an update take it to a dealer I wouldn't touch the ecu configuration as said if you're wrong you're in for a big bill and a lot of trouble

Totally agree wit Darren here.

On his advice I updated my firmware to enable TPWS and Eco Stats and its been great since. But I would stay away from the pcm updates as its difficult to fix of you make a mistake. I am still getting used to elmconfig but so far it pretty cool the stuff you can use it for and its great to be able to get access to these options.

I would love to add global window opening/closing to my car but not sure what modules I would need for the doors or any other hardware I would need.
