Repairing Small Chips On A Bonnet

Featured Replies

Alright guys

I have got a ford fiesta 2011 hot magenta which on the car bonnet has got two chips appeared on it and i was just wondering what's the best option to get rid of them?

I have seen some touch up paint, but I have heard that they do not give you a perfect finisih

However I am getting the front grill and a crack on the bumper fixed and then painted.... But not sure how much extra I am going to have to pay to get the above fixed....IMG_0540.JPG

Those chips are quite deep. You can use a touch-up kit to fill the crater with paint and then flat it back with some 2400 WnD to level it off then machine or hand polish it, takes a bit of time but the results are good.

The bonnet is a nasty place to try and hide stuff like this.

Hmmm if I got someone to do it would they have to repaint the whole bonnet??

They'd get the best result from repainting the whole panel,

I dread to think how much it cost to get a bonnet repainted

They don't have to.. but that would be the best resulu.

Wouldnt be too much, or just touch it up

You can buy touch up kits from ford dealer. Don't use the brush that came with it, instead use a tooth pick or something similar to dab the paint into the hole as the brush is too big and will get paint around the hole as well. It might take a few layers to fill the hole as the paint will shrink when it dries but on the final layer use the clear coat. When it has dried for a few days VERY LIGHTLY sand only the touch up paint and check after every few passes with sand paper that you haven't sanded too far. when it is level polish the area. The paint is very thin and easy to sand through clear coat so be very careful or have a professional fill it for you

It'll never be perfect. The touch up kits just take the eye off it :)

As I've just said in another thread, cocktail sticks & ear buds cut in half work well

I recently went round my whole car armed with a touch up kit and toothpicks. Definite improvements at a middle and far distance and some are pretty well disguised up close! I only had one chip as deep as that and that was behind the right hand rear wheel, where you can't really see! I layered up some paint anyway.

A polish / scratch remover paste on the area afterwards won't be a bad thing either. I was too afraid to get out the sandpaper, but I've no doubt better results can be had with!

A bonnet from most body shop's is min £100 . The question is it worth repairing ? Doesn't look like it would rust and cause a hole . If you do get it sprayed you then have to worry is the colour going to be the same as the original
