Unknown Gizmo On Rear Of Break Backplate

Hi i have noticed something on the rear of the brake back plate on my 2000 Focus hatchback.it is a peg about half inch long with i plastic end with a screwdriver slot in it there is also a spring around the peg.I have searched the internet and manuals etc in vain to find out what it is.Is it important?, what does it do?.i twiddled it and now the spring has come off!.i have done untold damage?.Please help.Regards and thanks.
