Last Minute Doubts Over Buying 2011 1.6 Tdci

Featured Replies

Hi,

My 10 year old Audi died last week, and after much searching I've found a nice '11 plate 1.6TDCi (full ford service & 48k miles) that I'm going to look at tomorrow. I'm suddenly worried that I might be doing the wrong thing having read about issues around the DPF. Do I run away.. or just make sure that I follow good practice to look after it and service it properly.

Cheers

Follow good practice - but be aware that the dpf will need replacement at some point & question if you really need a diesel car & why you need one

Also the EGRV can be a source of grief unless it's blanked off

Bear in mind that a dpf equipped vehicle depends on regular high-ish engine rpm journeys to maintain the dpf - so if you're just trundling around with frequent short journeys a dpf equipped diesel car may not be suitable

the car is a fine car when looked after properly. Regular oil changes every 6k and she will be fine.

The DPF is a different matter, is will fill up and it will cost a small fortune to fix it when it does, my advice is to save that road tax your no longer paying and get it "fixed" asap, youll never have to worry about that again, with good oil changes and keep a good look out for injectors leaking etc im sure you will never experience any of the horror stories you hear on here.

Get that EGR valve blanked off yesterday, then consider "fixing" the DPF, it'll all be good!

Thanks for the feedback folks. Feeling much better about it going to see it now. I'll just make sure that I look after it. I don't think 'fixing' the DPF is an option now as it appears to be an MOT failure if it's missing. :-) I'll give a the EGR a good clean every once and a while and use some Wynn DPF cleaner too.

Hopefully I will be a 'Blue' badge (not that sort) holder again by this time tomorrow. Last one was a Sierra in 1998!

Wynns dpf cleaner is no good - it combusts prior to reaching the dpf - I use & recommend Archoil / Bergdahl products

Blank the EGRV instead of cleaning it :)

im fairly sure that given the large number of folk on here who have had DPFs "fixed" and have had absolutely no come back at the MOT is a good sign that youll be fine :)

each to their own tho
