2010 Zetec 1.6 Spark Plugs

Featured Replies

Hi,

How often should the plugs be changed? I thought 3 years but I've seen posts suggesting 80-100k (mine has done 36k in 5 years).

I presume NGK TR5B-13 are correct replacements?

What torque setting should be used?

Thanks,

D

3 years / 37,500 miles maximum i.i.r.c. - according to Fraud - although I used to change mine yearly & will continue to do so on the Focus

3 years ,37.5k , thats the max, the ngk plugs you mention are the right ones , and 15nm torque

1.0mm plug gap most are pregapped at 1.3mm

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated

I change mine yearly I used to use ngk then switched to bosch and noticed better starting (with the four electrode ones) now back to genuine ford

Ford ones are Bosch iridium plugs rebranded

Are they? They aren't the ones I used though as the ones I used had 4 electrodes ford only have one

Most of the ford plugs are now ngk branded, but not all .

The focus ignition system early focus is Bosch then ngk either are good not the 4 electrode ones standard iridium ones are best

The plugs I took out were Ford branded Bosch. I put some Bosch plugs into a Ka a few years ago and had occasional pinking problems which went away when I put NGK plugs in. OK, so it was a 1.3 Rocam but I tend to go for NGK these days.

I left them gapped at 1.3mm as I found some info at car repair manual for the engine code that said they should be 1.3 - I'll see how they go.

Smear of copper slip in the thread and torqued to 15nm....so far so good.

The manuals and suppliers are correct 1.3mm but this caused coil pack failures and rough idling so ford revised the gaps to 1.0mm this evens out the idling and stopped coil packs burning out as those plugs wear the gap increases so running and idling issues occur the coil pack burns out and you then need new leads plugs and coil pack which is expensive IDE have put them in at 1.0mm

Just checked on GSF and, as you say, the plugs listed on their appear to have 1.0mm gap (even the NGK TRB-13s). I'll have to leave them in until I can borrow the torque wrench again (!) which will probably be next week.

Just out of interest, when did Ford change the gap and were the coil pack failures particular to early/late or all Focus models? (mine is 2010).

Thanks,

D

ford etis now states 1.2mm, but would stick to 1.0mm

Does the etis relate to my particular engine code? If it says 1.2mm, I might as well leave them at 1.3mm (?)

1.2mm is for 2004-2010 1.6 ,

Next week could be 1.1mm. ford change there minds daily on some technical data, would gap them 1.mm , changed a lot of coil packs when gaps get to big.

OK - thanks for clarifying. Thanks to all for info on this one.
