Rear Number Plate Lights.

Featured Replies

Does anybody know the legal requirement for illuminating the rear registration plate, its just that I took delivery of numerous led type bulbs..I've got some amber ones for the side repeaters, and I've got some festoon type led that will fit the reg plate lights these are quite bright compared with the standard bulbs, I haven't replaced any rear light bulbs at all, not bad for 10 years old, anyhow I was thinking about fitting red led festoons but I'm thinking that might be against " the rools".

Any answers much appreciated as usual folks.

I believe they have to be '' white ''

Yep white.

I also believe there is a minimum / maximum bulb wattage

No maximum brightness as they point towards the plate not rearwards.

Must be white light, other colours are illegal.

TXS.2.2..

Thanks for that about google..I am totally "non internet savvy' and that would probably of been the last place i looked..

Anyhow found my Philips screwwy nice and handy for replacing the reg plate lights with something a bit modern,so in I put some nice new LEDs.

Quite a difference, and took 5 mins..result..as you chaps say..

The chrome reg trim reflects the light a lot more than with the standard festoons..

Before..middle and after.

Oh and thanks again fellas for the heads up on this.:)

Just upgraded the sidelights..again amazing difference!! I hope I haven't picked up a dose of led infatuation.. as I've also replaced the footwells with them! some of these dodars have loads of little lights on them, one item like the number plate festoons have 8 leds inside them, the ones in the sidelights are 10 smd if that's the correct term? and have ball lenses in the ends and there also in the footwell, although they are too big to fit in the puddle lights, so I will put some blue zenon gas w5w instead.....haha still not decided about the upgrade for the halogens on the front though....idle hands..just fitted the puddle bulbs didn't take a more than a minute to do each..happy for now.

And as you can see

"I love red carpet", by the way.

Looks fantastic. Did you use one shop or many? Internet or high street? Thanks.

What's the point in being grown up if you can't act childish every now and then?!

I have just picked them randomly of eBay although I need to improve my shopping tactics...like when I find a nice set of LEDs I should also check what other items the seller has..might get 2or3 different sets of the same 1 guy..think I used about six different sellers..but ebay is still pretty new to me..anyhow I've now used 9 led bulbs on the interior plus a tenth one in the boot ..the clear indicator lenses are too small for the amber LEDs I got for them..I have small leds that fit but not amber..so I've put some nice chrome indicator bulbs in..either that or get my old orange indicators out and fit them with the little white LEDs???

For some reason the rear map reading lights are reverse polarity bulbs so I've not replaced them.. also not the usual spade type but very little bayonet type..weird..

I've got plans for the headlights,I've already fitted very bright LEDs to the sidelights...but what I've done is bought a brand new unused Bosch headlights (this way dosent leave me stuck without lights..can also take my time) which I'm going to split and get my mate who has a spray shop to dip them and make them look like carbon fibre... then add led main lights....

I wanted to do the lights all nice like.. but with a pitted and scarred outer lenses that would of defeated the look...might even add DRLs..

Thanks for that. They look cracking. I went LED crazy on a previous car and had to be told enough! I'm getting the urge again!! Thank you.
