Mk7 Brake Discs

Featured Replies

My 62 Mk7 has just had its first MOT and failed due to front brake discs and pads. It has only 10,000 on the clock although it is used more than a couple of times a week. I have recovered the failed items and noted that the discs themselves are severely evenly worn whilst the pads show little wear although they are ragged around the edges. It appears to me that the discs are soft. Has anybody had a similar experience and/or suggestions as to how to get compensation. The dealer is taking no action.

Brake discs will wear as the asbestos has been removed from the pads, so to make the braking more effective the disc material has changed.

If you allow your car to sit idle the discs will also rust and as you use the car you are scraping away the rusted metal and increasing the wear. I had to replace my front discs at the first MOT as they had reached the wear limit.

My mums 1982 Fiesta had its front discs on for 126K miles before replacement.

What did they fail the discs on? As rules on failing brake discs have changed, they have to be seriously weakend to fail now,

Thank you Ian. That is an interesting line of enquiry. How do I find a copy of these rules? I have measured the wear and it is down by around 1.0mm overall from the 23.0mm of the new one.

That is not a failure then, think it's time to phone vosa..

Wasn't halfords or kwik fit was it?

Click on class 4 manuals, then 2 versions available, use the top one , click contents, section3 , mechanical brake components, then down to discs/ drum, accross to reason for rejection, is the disc seriously weakened or insecure?

The manual is a good read for anyone on here concerned about mot failure items

Seriously weakened or insecure doesnt mean pitted/scored/corroded/worn ( no measuring of disc allowed) , unless the disc is weakened , ie about to break up/ crack. This is where the varience in testers opinions/ experience comes in to play.

I know from experience at what point I consider disc is weak. Someone else may have a different opinion.

If it was a Ford dealer they have been known to ring a customer and try it on, they did with me twice.

My reply is they were fine yesterday when I checked them it will pass the MOT.

Thank you to everyone for their help. Unfortunately I have just recovered the Refusal of MOT Test Certificate and the reason given for the failure was Brake Performance and its quotes 3.7.B.2 & 3. I still cannot get my head around a 3 year old car with low mileage having its brake discs needing replacement. Do I have a case with Ford?

so brake imbalance and fluctuation .

brake discs and pads are a wear and tear item, ford wont want to know.

i hope i've read this topic right

Brake disc/pads worn @ 10,000 miles? 62 plate? My brake bads didn't need replacing until 45,000 miles. 60 plate and at the 3rd year service. Disc didn't need to be replaced but i did it anyway. Something is not right there.
