Mk6 1.4 Post Blanking Problem

Featured Replies

After the blanking plate mod my 1.4 has a slight hicup in power, just intermittent and quite random, it's like a momentary ignition cut.

I put some Wynn's diesel injector cleaner in the fuel and it runs a bit smoother now but still has the random hicup.

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar thing and what might be causing it,

thanks.

How long ago did you blank it? How many miles etc. Have you tried running some higher octane diesel through it just to give it a good kick?

Thanks Kieran,

Just wondered if it rang a bell with anyone but I'm sending for a new airfilter and doing an oil flush/change to see what that does.

I only just did the blank so only 60 miles with plate and diesel injector cleaner in tank, it seems to be improving.

When you did the blank, did you take off the air filter box and remove the fuel filter? Was it straightforward after that?

Hello James, Yes I took off the AFbox and f/filter. It's very tight for working space at the back, the top bolt is not too bad but the lower bolt is hidden with no room for a socket. So it's a ring spanner job and even that was too long. (I had to dremmel cut mine down to size), but it was all worth it as the car now has a lot more life in it.

It just depends if you are dexterous in tight places.Hope this helps. Mart

Thanks for the reply Martyn; I got to that point when I tried last time but the bolts were too tight and in an awkward position for the ratcheting screwdriver with socket I was using. If I can find a suitable spanner I might try again :)

Hopefully it will improve the responsiveness in 1st gear, mine seems quite laggy. Have you noticed any change in mpg or is it too early to say?

Edit - Just thought, perhaps the hiccup could be caused by air still in the fuel lines after you removed the filter. Do you have a priming bulb? Because I've been fiddling with mine trying to get to the EGR valve I started getting symptoms again reminiscent of a failed injector - most noticeable really rough/jerky idle - I gave mine a further pump/prime even though I couldn't see air in the clear plastic pipe and that seems so far to have cured it :)

Hello James,

sorry for the delay, I got no e-mail note and just seen your post.

Car has been running like a dog, put in the new air filter and today changed the fuel filter, gave the primer bulb a good few pumps maybe 30 or more to fill the filter and clear the lines of air bubbles, engine went first go after that.

I've not been out for a run though, I'm sick and tired of limp mode! I just don't trust it to be fixed.

On Tuesday it goes in for remapping and I'm hoping that will sort it, if not I'm screwed!

The two egr valve bolts are 8mm and you really need a good fitting ring spanner, the bolts are not best quality and if you 'round' the heads it's game over as far as removing them and I'm meaning the lower bolt really as thats the !Removed! to reach.

I ended up cutting a ring spanner down to 90mm length, it's a lot of fuss for two bolts but what can you do?

That was a ring /open which gives you the best angle. The lower bolt is moved by holding the spanner left handed and reaching round 'blind' with your right hand and pressing the ring in place with your index finger and your left to turn the spanner, it's a similar deal to get the top bolt although at least you can see that one.

If the car would stay out of limp mode then the result of blanking would be great as the low down power is far more responsive and the 'lag' is almost non existant.

Mpg is shot to hell because I'm stuck mostly in limp mode so it's all up to the mappers now.

Hope this helps, Mart.
