Diesels

Featured Replies

With all the press full of Volkswagen's problems with Diesels and this forum mostly consisting of Diesel problems, has it had it's day or can it survive?.

Depends how many other manufacturers are actively "cooking the books"! I have no doubt if VW have been doing it the others will have been/are doing the same.

I don't think the diesel has had it's day given the good ACTUAL economy they give. You may gather form this comment that I have no faith at all in manufacturers economy figures which, IMHO, are total cack!

VW's issue is with faking emissions & not with the diesel car itself, euro 5 & 6 emissions ensure diesels are at least as '' clean '' as petrol engine cars & of course diesel is a far more economical fuel

50% of all cars sold in the U.K. are diesels

I see diesel cars continuing to be sold for the foreseeable future

In my opinion the biggest issue with diesel is a lot of drivers are using them for something they were not really intended for - short journeys.

The biggest thing you read on here must be regarding DPF filters.

True, driver error is the cause of most issues

VWs problems don't really affect the UK, it's to do with the lower NOx levels allowed in the US. They're basically allowing more NOx on the road than on the test rig - but that's irrelevant for anyone blocking the EGR anyway lol.

Personally I think diesels have had their day for private cars, I wouldn't be buying one new. With all the potential faults and the fact that the economy is worse than 10 years ago due to the emissions rubbish is making them non financially economical. In 2017 tax will be a standard price as well, so cheap tax is no longer a diesel benefit.

You will still need diesel commercially though...

true, petrols have come a long way with MPG and i do prefer the instant power that they bring. Couldnt do without a turbo though, something about that kick that puts a smile on my face.

This new tax system (which to be fair is more sensible albeit expensive) has just sealed the direction of my new car, so once my DV6 engine packs in itll be on to Petrols

I understand that in the real world testing have shown that no car in the US meet the standards for NOx. Most are around 7 times over and VW are 40 times over hence the action being taken.

NOx is part of the EURO 5 & 6 standards so it most likely means VW in the UK don't meet EU standards. The EU mostly won't do anything about as the German government will fudge a deal in some way.

Sadly its the people who purchased a car believing it was good or better for the environment than another make who are the losers.

I agree to a point but some modern diesels deliver an excellent balance of economy & performance.

I've been driving a diesel ST-2 for the last week & when driven sensibly it's been returning 49 MPG (confirmed at the pumps) but can still deliver performance (with an economy hit) if I decide to drive it like i stole it :driving:

I accept some diesel engines, especially some of the lower output units are a waste of time considering the hassles involved.

On a more depressing note my 7 day test drive is coming to an end tomorrow so this is what I'll feel like tomorrow once the car's been collected! :lamo:
