To Ford Focus Or Not To Ford Focus... That Is The Question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 2007 fiesta 1.25 zetec climate fiesta with 38,000 miles on the clock.

Car has been amazing since I bought it minus the clutch master cylinder clip problem that caused my clutch to fail on Saturday.

This is being repaired tomorrow and I will have my car back by Wednesday.

I have been thinking of upgrading to a larger, faster car and I am interested in the Focus.

I really like the 2010 Focus 1.6L Zetec S & Titanium models.

Will this car be much faster and which model would you recommend, zetec S or titanium?

I am looking for one in light blue with maximum 35,000 miles on the clock on a budget of around £5000-£7000.

Should I bother, will I be impressed, Is it worth it?

let me know what you all think please :)

(I have uploaded pics of current car and desired car).

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

Yeah the focus does drive better than the fiesta. The titanium comes with a lot of toys , but then the zetec s comes with less toys but looks smarter. If u get the titanium uu (one of the later ones like 2010 you'll get dab radio and USB etc that the zetec s might not have. Also u get better trim, well, seats in the titanium. I have the special edition sport (one of the last in the old shape focus) with is nearly a titanium in spec but not quite. The titanium also has rear elec windows and cruise control, auto lamps and lights. All the luxury stuff. The zetec s u get nicer alloys , a body kit and a start button - as does titanium. The 1.6 unit isn't fast but I find it fine. Think you'd maybe get a 2.0 in the sport.

The 1.6 petrol isn't quick at all, with the added weight of the Focus it'll probably feel about the same as your Fiesta! Especially if you want one with options like a Titanium.

That shape Focus is a much nicer driver than that shape Fiesta though!

Personally I'd go for a Focus with a better engine, 1.8 petrol at the very least, but you really need to test drive a few and decide for yourself. :)

True what tomsfocus says the kerbweight for these focuses are mad it's like 1.8 tonnes. Ur 1.25 will be nippier. Balance if u want spec vs sport. And consider at least the 1.8 unit. Depends what ur using it for to be honest

my 1.25 is anything but nippy.

I would like a mix of spec & sport.

I drove a 2.5L ST the other week and that blew my socks off.

I don't need anything that extreme but a nice 2.0 would do me.

I just use it for milling about and 5 no. 15 mile journeys to work and back a week.

My car is great but it doesn't have the looks, sound, speed and isn't cool.

I would certainly be disappointed to buy a Focus and find it as slow as my current fiesta.

I have a 2010 Zetec trim 1.6 Focus (100BHP); note there are two engine variants at 1.6 - one is 100 brake and the other is 115, I think, due to a variable valve timing cam. It might be wise to look into this as the 115 brake version may not be far off a 1.8 (?)

I didn't buy mine for speed but it goes alright particularly because it's relatively low geared. If I drive it steadily, I have been getting well over 45 to the gallon on a country road run which is very surprising given that it weighs about the same as an aircraft carrier.

The handling is brilliant and the car feels solid and well built.

My only criticism of it is that I feel it needs a 6th gear - engine speed is about 3000RPM at 65MPH so expect a lot worse fuel economy than your fiesta if you like sitting at 80 on the motorway.

Cheers,

D

Agree with the above, I've got a 2011 1.6 estate mk2.5, it's a little low geared especially on the motorway, I seem to average 40 mpg taking it easy, not the fastest thing in the world but it does the job.

I guess I won't be going for a Focus then really... unless I was to get an ST.

My favourite car is the 2.0 TDI Volkswagen Scirocco to be honest and I know that packs a pretty nifty punch...

only bad side is it is twice the price of an equivalent Focus.

Anyone know much about Sciroccos?

would you really consider rocco after all that's been happening at vw

  • Author

Not sure I'm all that bothered about emissions to be honest.

It is all coming out now anyway I bet they are all doing it.

It wouldn't put me off the Scirocco anyway.

It's been my favourite car since I laid eyes on it.

Been to sooooo many garages and never spotted anything I like even a tenth of how much I like the scirocco.

It's just for £7000 you can get an amazing Focus but for an equivalent Scirocco you are looking at £14000-£15000

I'd buy another VW after their emissions scandal...I'm just hoping all this will make the price of VAG stuff plummet due to the general public knowing little about cars... I mean, anyone blanking the EGR is causing far more NOx than what VW are allowing on the road anyway!

It could also have the other effect though, they may have to remap the affected ones for lower power and worse economy to get the NOx down, that wouldn't be so good! :(

As for Scirroccos, I like the look of them, and the 2.0 TDI in the later cars is better than in the earlier ones, but don't know anything else lol.

The scirroccos a damn nice car for sure........

but if you get a tdi mind you dont choke on the toxic fumes that the engine management is craftily masking........

:-D

It's twice the price but is it twice as good? I think the only fear about it would be residuals if they have to remap and the performance/economy both worsen and VW usually only win out over rivals in reviews on residual value. Then there is the road tax.

As to everyone doing it, I'm not so sure.

A friend of mine had a Scirroco after a Celica (which he thought was terrible). He loved it. I'd been it in it a few times and it seemed like a solid enough car but pricey.

All manufacturers trick the tests in one way or another, whether its removing alternator belts for better mpg figures, putting extra weight in the car for a slower 0-60 to get a lower insurance group, or lying about emissions...

VW have just been smarter about it tbh.

You make a good point there though, it probably isn't twice as good. I chose the Focus after another Golf purely on price as I was looking at 2 very similar spec/engine ones. And yes I'd 'like' a Golf still, but I just can't justify the extra cost when the Focus isn't 'that' much worse. :)

Prefer the first pics..but their both pretty cool looking!!

  • Author

Yeah they are but very pricey and three times the size of my fiesta.

I do absolutely love them though.

I've booked a test drive on Saturday.

Will cost me two arms and two legs if I want it after!

We just bought a Skoda as there was nothing in the Ford line up that could do the job at the same price.

Our first departure from Ford since I started buying cars in 1989!

So far, so good (touch wood) and its a petrol so at least no worry in that regard.

There are some things about it that I'd like Ford to do and vice versa...

I went and test drove the new Skoda Octavis VRS today.

VERY VERY nice car, extremely fast and full of gadgets.

The interior was top notch.

Just a shame it was £20,000..... £300 per month for 4 years and then £7500 to buy it.

Think I am going to get a VW scirocco instead

Yea h very true Redfox.

It is the same engine but a smaller car.
