Focus Mk2 1.8 Thermostat Replacement

Featured Replies

Does anyone have a guide for the replacement of the thermostat on the 1.8 engine in a Mk2?

The thermostat definitely needs changing and I have received a quote from a garage that I simply can fathom or afford the charge, not when the part is sub £30 at Euro Car Parts.

To confirm the stat needs changing, I have had a bluetooth ELM with DashCommand running while driving, and the temperature was dropping down to 69c when driving on the motorway one night this week. I couldn't get the temp up, even running the engine at high revs. Highest it got to was 72c when driving in the streets back from the Motorway.

If anyone could help out with a guide it would be really helpful.

Is that petrol of diesel?

I have done a thermostat on the 1.8 diesel. Stat and gasket from ford was less than £20

Hello!

I have same problem with my thermostat, my engine is always cold :-(

stef123, I am planning to change it this weekend in my 1.8 TDCI - 115.

Will I have to pull the alternator? Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

Have a look here, for guide how to remove it

Thanks GMX!

I will do it ASAP.

Thank you very much for that link.

Thats the petrol engine, diesel is in a completely different place, nowhere near the fan belt. Although I wouldn't change without putting a new thermostat housing at the same time on the 1.8tdci.

The OP Gareth (Gaznicki) has a 1.8 petrol engine.

Yes, you're right there

Haven't had any luck yet in finding a video for the diesel thermostat. I haven't had to change mine, so it's a case of finding someone who has

I done it, covered starter with bag and just let the water go from thermostat housing which is directly above it. The housings crack very easily (become brittle) when refitting so put a new one on or you will be doing the job twice and with anti freeze its not cost effective to leave the old one on. (Did mine twice)

Thanks a lot. I will find out this weekend. If you open the hood.....is it on the right side near the battery? I will try next saturday.

Is it necessary to access by the bottom of the engine? I plan to purge all circuit coolant from the radiator drain hose, before changing the thermostat. Sorry for my poor English.

Thanks to all of you.

Open hood at front of engine nearly centre but maybe inch or 2 nearer the battery side. Looks a little something like this:

That doesn't come with thermostat or gasket.

Thanks to all of you. It's nice to receive so kind answers.

I will change it this weekend. I will write to you after doing it.

Regards and thanks again.

I encourage all those who are in doubt because it is really easy to change the
thermostat in this model, 1.8 TDCI.

It is very well located, in a very accessible location, facing once you open the hood and
take off the plastic cover of the engine.

I will put some pictures here to help whoever is in doubt.

Thank you very much to all of you :)
