Engine Malfunction Warning Display

Featured Replies

I've a Focus 1.6 tdci 2009 and I have a big triangle light up filling the whole display say 'Engine Malfunction' The car seems to be running fine and the engine sounds like it always did! I wondering why this light has come on and what I can do about it!

The engine management light hasn't come on and when I plug the OBD in it says there are no codes to read!

Has the light gone off now since plugging your reader in? Did it also say Service Now too? I had that happen to me a while ago along with reduced power in my 1.6 Ecoboost. It never logged any codes and has been fine since. Just see if it does it again and if it does then leave the engine running and plug your code reader in to see if it detects any codes.

Clearly i jinxed myself typing that as mine has now come back on!:(

The light hasn't gone off at all, it's on all the time. The car is running great, Engine management light is off, there's no codes to read on my simple obd reader, I've scanned the internet looking for idea's but nobody seems to be replying!

I hope you have better luck than me WES 180

A cheap OBD reader will likely only read powertrain codes and even then may not show all codes that are stored. You really need it on either Forscan or Ford IDS to check for error codes. Without knowing if any error codes are logged it is almost impossible to guess what is wrong with it.

It could be the glowplugs, it could be a blocked DPF filter or any number of other things.

Thanks for your reply Simon. After some searching on the internet I found a guy with an Identical car to mine with the exact same symptoms. He had an empty DPF fluid tank, I've checked my tank this morning and mine is empty also so I'm hoping this is where the problem lies!

If the first appearance of the light came on shortly after filling up with diesel then its a very good chance it is to do with your DPF and more specifically the EOLYS fluid that gets added to your fuel. The ECU keeps a count of how many times it has added some EOLYS and when it reaches the max will throw the engine malfunction light. (Eoyls fluid needs filled up approx every 30,000 miles and the counter reset - steps to reset docmentated in the Haynes manual BUT wont reset if you have thrown the engine malfunction warning)

This happened to us and car ran fine but our diagnostic tool , and the tools the AA have, did not find a fault code. We had to go to a Ford garage to get counter reset.

Very recently we had a "red warning triangle - engine malfunction" msg come on and found a fault code logged for the glow plugs. 3 goosed and 1 okay

..... took to long to write my reply... ah well

Well I hope its the fluid and not the glow plugs, I've heard the glow plugs are extremely difficult to remove without breaking them, as they are mega thin on these engines!

Thanks for reply anyway Martin, Its narrowed down many things. and your comments are very valid also.

Yes if your Eolys fluid is empty it will certainly need topping up, however you will need to reset the FACM counter to remove the warning light. You need either Forscan or Ford IDS to do this, there may be other universal diagnostics kit that can do it like Delphi for example but it does need doing.

You can reset counter without any diagnostics, just by a procedure using ign and fuel flap

Do you know the procedure Ian? I'd rather do the whole job myself now I've got this far!

I've found the 4 stage procedure with the fuel cap flap and the ignition key, but it doe's state, This will only work if done before the 'Engine Malfunction light' comes on! Specialist diagnostic equipment is needed after!

.

Yes you can if the engine malfunction message has not been tripped. In this case the OP will need suitable equipment to do so.

If you are planning on filling the pat fluid yourself and are able to get the car to near my work on a suitable day either around 1pm I can do it for you, not far off J26 of the M1 if you can't find anyone local to do it rather than go to a garage. Or after 10pm when I finish. I work 2-10 Mon to Fri.

Thanks for your offer Simon. I'm on a weeks holiday next week, I might just take you up on your offer up when I get back. The mrs has been wanting to go to 'Ikea' which I think isn't that far from you!

Ikea is just off the A610 at J26 and I work just a little bit further down the road. Just PM me if you want to arrange something.
