P0691 Cooling Fan Stayed On After Ign Off - Where Is Relay?

Featured Replies

Ford Focus 1.6tdci TDCI (with dpf)

Got home tonight (over 1hr drive) and turned ignition off. Walked past car and cooling fan still on. Didn't think much of it - cooling down or dpf regen.

20mins later still on...a bit strange... never been on this long before.

Fault code reader out and got P0691 low speed fan output circuit malfunction - short to ground.

Disconnected battery as not fixing just now.

Looked at my trusty (not!) haynes manual and it indictates that F15 in engine fusebox compartment should be a cooling fan relay BUT there isn't one in this location on the car. The notes on the fusebox cover also has a picture of a fan!

Does anyone know if there is such a relay and where it is for a 2008 ford focus 1.6tdci

Connected the battery this morning and fan did not come on.

Went a short run, car just got up to max temp, turned off ignition and fan not on.

So hopefully it was just a glitch but i think it will come back to bite me.

Would still like to know if my car has a relay for the cooling fan, if anyone knows

There is a relay for the fan, I can't remember off hand which it is though. Sure it's on the fusebox lid?

Thanks for looking - I'm afraid i cant find one on my build of car.

Looked around my engine fusebox a bit more - took a photo.

Car does not have a cooling fan relay in the engine fusebox. ( the lid and haynes manual are misleading)

The strip fuse F1 (50a) red cable goes straight to a chunky cylinder connector just below and to the left of the air filter box.

I was hoping my problem was just a relay sticking on but that does not seem to be the case so will have to investigate further)

NB! it has not happened today but i'm sure it will bite again.

Hi,

Thank you for your response.

Are you refering to the large gray relay on bottom half of picture (the lid says R12)

I thought that was the glowplug relay but i dont know if it can have more than one function

If the fan stays on at another time i will pull it out to see what happens.

Cheers

Yeah I remember now, I had the fan stuck on when the glowplugs burnt out, found somewhere (maybe Haynes, maybe here!) that relay controls both things. Pull it out and stick the air con on, you'll soon see if the fan still runs. I'm not sure one relay can do two items either but as I say I've read it somewhere!

dual function i recon it is from what ive just read.

basically the power is fed to the fan control module , then fan only activated by pcm via control wire to fan control module for either low or high speed

Thanks for your input, ian & tom, we have a plan now if it happens again
