Stuttering Up Long Hills

Featured Replies

Hello Guys,

This is my first time on the forums.

I have a ford focus 1600: year: 2001- 42,000 miles

Recently it has been stuttering after going up a fairly steep long hill. I change down gear and it stops. Once I get over

the hill onto normal undulating roads it seems to be fine.

The car if not jerking and the stutter is not major, but it worries me as I am no mechanic.

I have just had a service and the mechanic said he could not find anything wrong when he drove it.

I hate it when you lose confidence in a car and would really appreciate any advice you experts could give.

Is the engine petrol or diesel ?

  • Author

Sorry, it is petrol

Are you in the correct gear for your roadspeed when ascending hills ?

  • Author

I believe I am. It has happened once at low speed. I guess I am not a person that revs the hell out of a car.

It never used to happen, when it happens it does have a definite loss of power.

It sounds like the engine is labouring, as when you change into a lower gear, the car responds . . . were the spark plugs changed as part of the service ?

  • Author

The plugs were changed in the service

Check the HT leads

  • 3 weeks later...

I had a similer problem (if it's the sane). I took my car for a good run on the duel carriageway and motorway and it's been fine ever since
