Are Cheap Xenon Bulbs A False Economy ?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Well, I found a replacement for my 1999 zetec tddi focus estate. I now have a 2003 tdci Ghia estate, with only 56000 on the clock. I noticed that I needed a new headlamp bulb and popped into Halfords. Yes sir, we have a bulb for your car, it's £60 , because your car has xenon headlamps. We recommend that you change both at the same time !

Yes you can get ones on ebay much cheaper, but they aren't any good says the man at Halfords.

I then read that they may damage your ignitor which my local Ford dealer says cost £500 each !!!!

So, do I really have to shell out £60 a bulb, or are the ones for £12.95 a pair on ebay any good and could they damage my ignitor ?

Hoping someone much more knowledgeable can enlighten me. Mark Allen.

Sounds like they were pushing their super deluxe top of the range bulb on you. As long as it's the right size and wattage etc. it should be fine. Probably best to stick to a brand name of some kind though.

Or search 'Osram Night Breakers Unlimited H7' in ebay. £13.85 a pair.

I would link but I have no idea how to paste a link in this forum.

Osram NightBreaker Unlimited bulbs are best on the Market,

All dipped and high beam bulbs should be replaced in pairs because one is never far behind the other when blowing.

but halfords are way over priced and not as good as Osram in my personal experience.

when fitted have the headlights aligned at any place which does headlight alignment.

this will get the most from your bulbs aswell.

I have the Osram bulbs mentioned above and they are really good. Night time driving vision has improved immensely for me. I need to get some for the wife's car now...

He has Xenon bulbs which are not H7

I got some for my b.m.w of ebay cheapos main dip side and spots and never had a problem

Never had issues they are cheaper brighter and last longer than halford junk I buy from ap auto store on eBay no issues with any of there stuff.

no offence but the extreme white 55w xenon bulbs are better than osram brighter whiter light that illuminates way more of the road than any other bulb ive tried but each to there own preference they may be better in the mk2.5 headlights but they ain't that good in the mk2 perhaps that makes a difference

Hi Again,

Markallen5 here.

IInexusII seems to be the only one who has correctly seen that I have xenon headlights. These Osram bulbs are replacements for H7 bulbs, which are not xenon. They would not fit my car.

Still hoping someone can help with an informed opinion.

Cheers, Mark.

Don't worry I noticed too.
