Mk2 Focus 1.8 Tdci Egr ??

Featured Replies

Having a few issues with my 2009 Focus which I could do with a second opinion before sending it back to my local garage.

Its done 120k and does the classic egr stutter/pause periodically and does the usual warning lights on the dash and buzzer before going into lip mode. A quick flick of the ignition clears this off.

However,I recently took the step of blanking the top of the egr off on the inlet manifold, to try and solve the problem. The result was a very pleasant increase in performance. However the problem still persists, although not all the time. A example being we drove from Cornwall to Bristol with little to no issues but the return run was a nightmare with the car cutting out every 10 miles.

I purchased a couple of cans of Wynn's egr cleaner and sprayed this into the inlet manifold, although this made little difference as a slight stutter was still evident on the test run.

However, thinking about it; Should I have unblanked the egr then used the egr cleaner so all gunk and crap when back into the engine to be reburnt? Or have I done everything I can and my egr is beyond salvaging and I need to get my wallet out and buy another one?

A blanked EGRV is, in effect, a permanently closed EGRV & it's pointless replacing it - whether it's functional or not

You say that you blanked the '' top of the EGRV off on the inlet manifold '' ?

Have you blanked it in the correct place ?

Gunk & crap ( solidified oil & carbon ) accumulated in the inlet manifold does not re burn, it just clogs up the EGRV & the inlet manifold & in fact the recirculated exhaust gases do not & cannot reburn as they are inert after the first combustion process

I've blanked it at the top of the cooler as it passes back into the inlet manifold. As per the guide on here.

I was thinking that if the egr was still blanked then all the gunk in the egr has no where to go during the cleaning progress and would still stick causing the stuttering

I think any accumulated gunk in the inlet manifold is more of a problem, as once blanked the EGRV is isolated & will not cause any issues other than maybe illuminating the EML

These spray '' cleaners '' dilute the carbon build up & may take a while to be fully effective.

I would run some decent diesel fuel additive, such as Forte or BG244 or Archoil through the fuel system & note the results over several tankfuls of fuel

The best results can only be had by physically cleaning the inlet manifold

Did you put an alumunium plate or a solid steel plate in there?

Solid steel. Just can't work it out, as it runs fine locally then plays up on a motorway run

Maybe as others have said cleaner in the fuel might be better. Even the super fuels for a couple of tanks full, don't say the word injectors.

May not be egr, what dtcs are you getting when engine light comes on?

  • Author

I'll check the dtcs next time. The 'test' function on the car seems to have stopped working. I hold down reset and 'test' comes up on the display and nothing happens.

Anyway I've switched to Esso fuel for the moment with some additives to see if that makes a difference. Its still spluttering, and i've noticed the car does 3 distinct coughs in the space of a second and then the engine management light comes on and the goes into limp mode.

you need a code reader on it or all you will end up doing is guessing. im allowed to guess though and im guessing an injector issue.lol

Do I need a code reader, or can I used the self diagnostic function on the dash?

You need a code reader

And if injector issue , it may need a pcm update if your injectors are class 3 stage 4 emmisions.

Get yourself a modified elm cable and forscan. Click my guides in my signature then look at got an error on your car
