Focus Mk3 Tramlining?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Currently running Conti Sport's (3 or 5 can't remember which) on my Focus MK3, which lately when I'm travelling at low speed (30 ish) and hit any slightly rough bumps or hit any standing water my wheel seems to want to "wander" for a better word and feels very twitchy. I took it to a tyre specialist a few weeks ago and they've said the tread is getting low but not enough yet to warrant a change (I measured them at 3.6mm roughly) and told me I should get another few thousand miles yet. They did comment that my pressures were a little low but topped them up. I've since been reading that this could be "tramlining" does that sound about right with the tread running low? I'm considering getting a set of the Michelin All seasons tyres as the Mrs does a lot of travelling, has anyone used these or would someone recommend a particular tyre for my car?

Many thanks in advance.

What size wheels are you on?

The wider the tyre the more a car tends to want to tramline.

Any car can tramline but some are more noticeable than others and I do experience tramlining on my Focus.

Hi mate,

Many thanks for the reply, I'm running the upgraded 17" tyres which you can just about make out on my profile pic.

The 17" will tramline a bit.

Not as much as the 18" though.

Tramlining tends to be more noticeable if you have upgraded from a smaller (or smaller tyred) car.

Plus with the temperature at this time of year you won't have as much grip as they are optimised for summer use.

Thanks, any idea if the all weather Michelin would be worthwhile? I will probably change these in the new year. I will still leave the conti's on the rear if thats okay to do so as they've got loads of tread left.

Do you mean the new crossclimate ones?

I don't have any experience personally, but they seem to get good reviews.

Yeah, I was thinking of giving them a go.

Don't put grippier tyres on the front than the rear or you'll add oversteer to the tramlining lol. Crossclimates do look good though.

Hmmmm, might just stick with the continentals then! lol

Rotate them and swap to a full set of CrossClimates when needed. :)

Good idea, move the back to front and wait until they need doing?

Yep, that's what I'd do.

Thanks I will look into that :)

my car tramlines, I just let it go with it, and see how far I can get before I have to panic

I must admit, I never really thought it could be a fault with the car, I just tend to think its basic science,

grip surface area + weight / road conditions (weather and contour) = Amount of tramline...
