Help With A Whinning Noise From Engine 1.6 Petrol 100 2008

Featured Replies

my car has devolped a whinning noise, it wasnt to bad a few weeks ago but it is happening all the time now, cold or warm. i have added two youtube clips, if anyone has any ideas please comment

Could be a pulley / tensioner, is there noise there as soon as you start the vehicle ?

yes the noise is there straight away when cold and stays there all the time

Does the sound change when you turn your air con on ?

What I would recommend if possible to narrow down the sound if you could take your drive belt off then start the vehicle , if the sound goes away then will be one of your pulleys which has worn out if not possible then start your engine open up the bonnet and with great care try and locate the position the noise is coming from , from the engine bay I recon it's a pulley/bearing on its way out .

Hope this helps

Does not change when aircon is of or on. I have listened to it running with the bonnet up, it is coming from the belt area but I can not pin point it. I bought the car around 5 weeks ago with a warrantey, the guy I bought it of owns a garage and he came and took it to his garage yesterday and said he couldn't find anything significantly wrong with it, he sprayed a bit of oil on the belts to see if it would help, and said he couldn't hear the noise after leaving my village, I got in the car when he got back and could hear it straight away, when it was cold and when it was warmed up, so I do not understand how he could not of heard it, anyway I messaged him a video of the sound straight away and he said he would pick it up one day this week, he seem to think you can only hear it when he started it outside mine, when I've heard it hot or cold for a week now, he's advise was to drive it until the noise gets worse so you can pinpoint it better, which is stupid as its already noticeable

The noise will only get worse and when he comes to take the car away I would let him listen to the sound you are on about in front of him but like discussed early I can see a pulley/ bearing needing changing hopefully it's not your alternator which will be a little more pricey , but if you have only just brought the car then this is not acceptable at all, you also don't want to be driving the car round until it get much worse as it could do more damage then good.

Keep us informed on progress

I've had it looked at today by the garage I usually use,and I've been told it it's the clutch release bearing, i was quoted £340 by my local garage, but the release bearing is under warranty, so the guy I bought it of is going to ring warranty wise tomorrow or Monday and hopefully get it sorted for me by next week.

sounds nothing like a clutch release bearing you may also find warranty wise dont cover wear and tear

Ive just listened to your clips, that doesnt sound like release bearing to me either. But if it is, it wont be covered under warranty,

He said that's where the noise was coming from, the noise does change when you engage the clutch, and I know they will try and say it's wear and tear but it does say it is covered on the warrenty information I have.

its not unusual to have a whine from a ford gearbox ..it will say its covered in the book but the wear and tear clause comes into effect so they can refuse the repair since the cars 7 year old its fair to say its wear and tear and the release bearing hasnt failed its only noisy even if they go ahead with it youre better paying extra to have the clutch done as the whole gearbox is coming out anyway

I thought you said it sounded from belt area? Thats nowhere near gearbox.

  • Author

Yeah I know what you mean I've been through this process with one other car I've had, and yes the clutch would be changed as well, it's worth trying anyway. To be honest I'm not totally convinced about the bearing, the noise is there all the time, the noise does change when engaging the clutch, but the noise also seems to raise when steering at parking speed. The car didn't make the noise when I bought it I've had it 5 weeks now and it started about 2 weeks ago

  • Author

Yes I thought so, but I've listened to it more than once and to be honest it's very hard to pinpoint. I do trust the garage that looked at it today he does all the cars in my family.

ive heard noise just like that on 1.6 and it ended up being the waterpump seal making the sqealing/ noise . Not saying thats your problem , but if clutch release bearing doesnt fix it, that might be next area to look.

Keep us informed how you get on.

Warranty wise isn't worth paying for. Have a look at there "exemptions" on the website. you've Been conned..

It came with the car, I did not take it out separately, as I know they don't often payout, from past experience, I am not expecting them to pay out for the bearing/clutch, it's worth ringing and trying if not I'll pay.

First of all, Quentin Willson has a criminal record for altering the mileage on cars and selling them on

Secondly, here are the exceptions

Any Part which has suffered a Breakdown or Failure Due to Wear and Tear due to a lack of or incorrect servicing, oil or coolant leak, negligence, neglect, misuse, broken by your Repairer, criminal damage, theft or attempted theft, accident or any Part not reported at the time of repair by your Repairer.

Any Part which within the last 12 months has been the subject of a previous repair, attempted repair or documented as advised in need of repair.

Parts covered by any other plan, warranty, guarantee or goodwill offer of settlement.

They've pretty much covered everything.. also, if the car has been modified in the slightest, they won't pay up! Con artists!

In short . . . . the whole car then . . . . :(

Just read it, absolutely pointless having it then lol

You are better off by simply putting a few quid away every week to at least cover some of the cost of unexpected issues

Warranty direct do cover all the above and wear and tear and service and mot faults which is good as long as the cars 7 yrs or younger saved me a fortune

The Clutch and release bearing has been done today, and the noise has gone now.

ill give it a week and itll be back most ford gearboxes do
