Hi all

I'm interested in getting one of these elm327 devices but there seems to be loads available and I'm not sure what one to get. Any recommendations?

Also am I right in thinking that I need some sort of phone app or do these things work via a laptop. Preferably I'd like an app on my iPhone if that's possible. Again what do you guys use.

Regards

Adrian.

I got a really basic mini bluetooth one, cheapest I could find, torque app is the one you want to download, the pro version has lots of other features but the free version is also great to check codes and any realtime data.

Go for a USB one, in particular a modified one specifically for Fords (it'll have a switch/toggle on it). It'll need a laptop or tablet to plug into but you'll get much more detailed diagnostics from the likes of Forscan than you ever will with Torque (unless there are modified bluetooth ones of course!)

its a wired device for use with a computer BUT you will kick yourself if you don't get a modified device, as some parts of the car such as GEM cant be looked at with a non-modified one or BT.

you need to be careful with the Bluetooth ones, I picked up one to try and it buggered up my power steering, had to remove it, and kill the battery for a few min for the car to start properly!

They also tend to have a slight lag about them which is just annoying.

I think ive seen some modified BT ones around but after my last experience with BT ill leave it for someone else to play with, not worth the risk and as you say, Forscan is much better than Torque Pro etc

i have been using this for the last 2 years on my ST with the torque App on android. works fine. I belive for iPhone you need a specific one due to BT permissions on the phone although might of changed recently.

with this i could view all the sensors in torque need to find the OBD port on my MK3.5 now to have a look and see.

So if I go with the one you linked to dee_82. Once I buy that then do I need to download the software or will it come with software. Forgive me for sounding stupid.
