Ford Escort 1.8 Cabriolet Which Engines Will Fit?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, this is my 1st post on here. Basically i brought a escort 1.8 cabriolet and on way home it over heated as the person i brought it off never mentioned that it had a water leak  so temp went up and by time a pulled over it had over heated and blew head gasket. When i got it towed home i found out the head gasket had gone and possibly the head warped so i fitted a new head gasket hoping that i could get away with just the gasket but she smokes bad and is getting water in cylinder 3 so have decided to get new engine or maybe just swap the head. The engine i have is the 1.8 130bhp 16v zetec model. dose anybody know what other model engine will fit as am having a hard time finding a matching one :( Thanks in advance James

That's a shame about that engine mate, as the 130 is the rarer of the 1.8s.

Obviously the lower power 105 1.8 will fit, as would the 1.6 16v. RS2K would also fit but good look finding one.

If you can it would be a lot easier just to get a new head assuming nothing else is damaged?

I know mate its annoying as they are quite rare. I have seen a couple mondeo 1.8 silvertop engines on auction site but not sure which bhp model they are, If i did get one would it be worth me swapping my cams on to a the new head or would it be no difference, not sure if its the cams that make it the 130 bhp or if its the valves etc.

You might find its cheaper to get the head re-skimmed?

I went to have it reskimmed yesterday but chap said was too badly warped. Picked up a whole engine for parts, and stuck that head on now and worked yesterday but today it starts up but cuts out straight away lol

how well did you seal the head and gasket? Is the bottom end also warped?

Checked bottom end with a straight edge and feeler guage and was fine. Used new head gasket and head bolts. Started fine after apart from it seemed like it was misfiring. Today I checked plug gaps and wires etc and now it starts and cuts out straight after about a second or two. Almost like lack of fuel but I can't see it being fuel pump as was fine before

maybe, but the heat may have damaged things. I presume its a carb, in which case, have you checked the carb?

No carb it's the efi fuel injection

Have you done a leak off test? Might be worth doing

Haven't got a leak off test but am gonna stick the injectors off the new engine I got to see if that's any better

Changed injectors and still the same.

try making your own leakoff test with empty bottles, turn the engine over and check the output. You may find this is down to fuel delivery?
