Key Wont Work In Lock/trunk & Fob Not Working As Well

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I am new registering to this site but have visited it often and really appreciate the advice given. I have searched and searched for the issue I am having with my daughters car but have had no luck. We have a 2002 Ford Focus ZTS. My daughter locked her car with her key fob when she arrived at school, 4 hours later she went to unlock her doors but it didnt work. She then tried to use her key to manually unlock the door and that did not work as well. The driver door is the only door with a keyhole. She also tried the key in the trunk and it didnt work either. Both the door lock and trunk lock would not turn. We purchased a new battery for the key fob and still nothing. We ended up calling a service that was able to get the door open and the car started with no problem but the car still would not unlock manually or with the key fob. Any and all advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would start by checking the fuses, make sure the fuses for the central locking system are working.

You probably will need to rebuild the barrel and lock on the door and boot as it may be the key has been changed on the ignition, but not on the doors.

So I read somewhere that fuse 63 is the one that needs to be checked correct? Are there any others that may need to be checked as well. And that makes sense that the locks may need to be changed but what about the key fob no longer working? can the fuse affect that as well? or maybe does it need to be reprogrammed? Thank you for your reply!

it may be a case that the central locking fuse has blown so the system itself is not being powered.

if its anything like the modern fords, you can put a key in the ignition, twist from 0 to II and back to 0 (I think its three times, if not, may be five!) and the car beeps. Then you can press a button on the keyfob, and if the car detects it, it will beep and the indicator lights should flash.

That should at least repair the key, presuming all systems are working.

Not sure what model the ZTS is, I know the likes of the CL never had central locking but you could use an aftermarket kit, though if you are using only a ford key, you should definitely have the factory fitted variant.

Start off with the fuses, then check the wiring, might be worth removing the map light, then pulling out the module from the headliner, and then check the wiring is connected, you can also use a multimeter to check its getting power. Likewise, you can check the fuseboard is still getting power.

Is there anything else on the car which appears to have stopped working? if so, it may be an earth fault?

I did try that process to try to reset the fob but we never got the beep to reset the fob. I will check the fuse next and see if we have any luck there. Everything else seems to be working just fine. When I hit the lock/unlock button on the driver door it locks and unlocks all the doors with no issue.
