Add Coolant Or Not ?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Seeing the image do you think that i should add some coolant in the expansion tank to reach max level or i should leave it as it is. Car is 10 months old(3/2015) and has done some 9.000 km. I had added coolant 2 more times in the past months. Ford representative told me that perhaps car works just that way having coolant in min level.

I Personally would, I try to keep it just off max to be honest, but thats just me.

I agree with James here. I myself try to keep it just under the max where its just touching the bottom of the max arrow.

When the engine is cold the ideal coolant level is between the min and max, allowing for the coolant to expand to the maximum or just above when the engine is at optimum running temperature.

it should be between min and max when cold as stated in the owner handbook as when it expands it will go over the max by adding more you reduce the amount of space to pressurise the system therefore lowering the boiling point till it reaches the correct ratio it can also cause the expansion bottle to crack

reservoirs are marked with two levels. The lower mark is for checking
the coolant level when the system is cold. Most systems are meant to be
checked with a cold engine when coolant level should be at the lower, or
"cold" mark. The higher mark signifies proper level at operating
temperatures. The volume of space above the "hot" mark is provided for
coolant expansion and not intended to store excess liquid.it serves no purpose to fill this extra space up with coolant as it will need to be expelled from the system

Increased pressure raises the boiling point of coolant.

Thank you all for your answers. :)

@artscott79, very explanatory what you said. :)

When i checked the level, car was stationary for more than 7 hours, so i think it was quite cold to measure it.

Since there had been some cases with broken hoses, as you all know, i am a bit careful with such things, so i check coolant level very often.
