Dld 414/416 (Tdci) Engines - Fiesta/ Focus

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm thinking of getting a new daily and I shortlisted my model range to either a Focus or a Fiesta. Since it is going to be a daily car I want it to be a diesel. The diesel engines I'm opting for are either the 1.4 tdci (DLD 414) or 1.6 tdci (DLD 416) for the Fiesta or the 1.6 tdci (DLD 416) for the Focus.

Now I know that these engines are not all done by Ford but in some websites I read that Ford use Peugeot (HDi) engines and in others I read that these engines where produced together with Peugeot.

So what I am asking is, is it true that these engines are only done by Peugeot and Ford source the engines? or it is a new engine that Ford designed researched and produced together with Peugeot?

Please any sources in your answers are very appreciated since I want to see whether Ford are sourcing PSA engines or developing them with PSA.

Thank You :)

These are a joint development by Ford & PSA, the agreement was announced in1998, the first engine in use was in 2001

I personally wouldn't touch the DV6TED4 version with a bargepole unless it has absolutely perfect service history & even if it has, it still needs modifications to prevent the turbo failing regularly

Respected Ford forums around the world are full to overflowing with expensive tales of woe regarding this engine

I think the problem with the turbo is the variable vane. Basically it's build quality is rubbish and if it gets clogged up it will affect the performance and can also wreck the turbo if one of the vanes dislodge. A place up near Fleetwood, Turbo Rebuilds, have manufactured an uprated variable vane ring. Costs about £80 and is simple to fit.

Hi sorry for late reply, first of all thank you for replying to this thread I really appreciate it.

I am aware of such defects these engines may have but overall I think they are some of the best diesel lumps out there at the moment in terms of durability because some other manufacturers suffer way more horrible reliability issues such as the VW group's TDI. Although I agree with you that a petrol lump can be more reliable, I think that diesel is more suitable for me as a daily use.

Thank you for your info, I researched and found this:

"This engine was developed in Trémery by Peugeot, as described in the joint-venture agreement with Ford." for the 1.4 & "This particular engine was designed by Peugeot[5] engineers on behalf of PSA and Ford. Due to high demand, it is currently (2008) being produced in both France[citation needed] and England." for the 1.6. So does this technically mean that Ford are using engines designed by Peugeot and just built in UK? The thing is that I'm curious if Ford had anything to do design wise in these engines.

Sorry for long post and thanks :)
