Ford Focus C-Max 1.6 Or 1.8 Petrol

Featured Replies

Hi guys, pretty set on a focus c-max as my next car after my fiesta got written off. Just after the general opinions or experience people have had with a mk1 1.6 or 1.8 petrol. My last car was a 1.4 so a 1.6 would already be an increase in power and the fiesta coped fine with my driving style. Took two holidays to Cornwall last year an coped with the load then and it's loaded up with bikes etc when we go away at weekends so would I really benignity that much more with going for a 1.8? All help much appreciated.

I think it's good to go for the extra grunt when you need it and when you don't ,save on the pennies with a light foot, ease off on the hard braking and use the gears correctly.

Sent from my iPad using Ford OC

buy the large engine size if you can afford the insurance and running costs

My 2007 1.6 was fine although it mostly had just the 2 of us in it so i couldnt vouch for long run 5 up economy and power.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm still unsure how much the insurance are going to pay out but reckon I've got around 2-2.5k, I'm looking for something with no more than 80k on the clock and full service history. Seen a few of both 1.6 and 1.8 in the criteria I'm after but would rather buy form a garage than a private seller.

1) Is the C-Max heavier than the ordinary Focus?

2) Will you be doing a lot of country/motorway driving? (Requiring quicker acceleration, hills, overtaking etc.)

3) Will you be carrying a heavier loads quite often (people/things)?

If you answered "yes" to at least two of the above, go for the larger engine IMO.

i WAS biased towards the 1.8 as it doesnt have the cambelt to change (its chain drive ) mazda derived engine, reliable.

but, the 1.8 is known to drink engine oil, and saw one last week that had only done 70k on 07 plate and smoked like a steam train!!

but no longer advise on the 1.8

id go for the 1.6 now if i were you.

thats just my opinion based on what i saw

Depends which 1.6 there the standard 98bhp or the Ti vct which has the same power as the 1.8 and is a newer engine but less road tax the 1.8 does drink oil its not the most refined either

For general driving, the 1.8 doesn't drink that much oil - provided it's been well looked after.

Start hooning around at higher RPM (towards the red line or very regular Autobahn type driving) and you'll notice it!!

The 1.8 isn't a bad engine. A little thirsty perhaps, but it does deliver good steady power. They make for good cruising engines. They're not too bad around town, but do benefit from a good Italian tune up every now and then (bearing in mind the above re: oil).

The 1.6 tdci is newer tech than the lynx 1.8

The lynx 1.8 tdci is stronger.

having driven both, i prefer the 1.8 (my last car was a 1.6tdci)

The correct answer is

Pick not the 1.6 or 1.8 choose the 2.0 it is 150ps as in the fiesta st.

Jamie
