Ford Focus Injector Deposit

Featured Replies

Dear all,

I have had issue with engine warning light coming on, DTC fault code is engine overboots, generally I have had not loss of power or performance.

Recently I have changed the oil and filter and fuel filter and the light has not come on again for a few weeks.

This morning the light came on again whilst driving at about 70mph, again no loss of power noticed.

When I left work this afternoon, as soon as I started the engine there was the sound of air escaping from under the bonnet whilst the engine was on tick over. I have removed the engine cover and this seems to coming from injector No.3.

I also noticed that there is a black, shiny solid deposit around the base of the injector where it enters the engine.

I have tried to attached a photo of this as best I can.

There is also oil in the hose between the turbo and the air filter.

I have read that there is a common problem with 3rd injectors on this car?

Its the 1.6 tdci, 2009.

I have done 121k miles and the cam belt has not been replaced if that matters at all.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Having owned a diesel focus I know your troubles. But these aren't problematic as such. So let's clear a few things up for you.

1st oil in the hose between air filter and turbo. Or turbo to intercooler etc is normal to have a thin layer in the pipes. Only worry if you have a cups worth you can pour out from each hose. This would more than likely be a blown seal. Car would be smoking and all other kinda of faults . This isn't the case. So don't worry at all for this one.

2nd. On these engines the injector seals are prone to failing. It no longer seals the injector to the block. Hence the escaping of air noise you describe. ( loss of compression due to unsealed cyclinder) the black shiny deposite is carbon buildup. Only fix for this is to have the seals replaced.

Depending if your mechanically minded it's a very easy fix . If not a garage would charge around 2 hours to do. Parts can be brought from eBay or your ford dealership only. There are 4 seals but only 2 that cause this fault need to be changed but all 4 are recommended. I think for a complete set of seals for all 4 injectors are about £22 on ebay . 4 seals per injector..

It's also advised to change all 4 injectors together however I did mine myself and only change the 2 that were at fault for cheapest.

Hope this helps you

Oh and also check the oil supply line to the turbo. Due to ford's poor design these can get blocked and cause turbo to stave of oil. Eventually resulting in turbo failure.

I was going to say perhaps its the leak off pipes from injectors
