Does sound like the alternator has had it. Looking at the belt with the engine running, does it appear to be running ok? no slapping or anything out the ordinary?

There is a 90% chance the problems are caused by a defective alternator or the freewheel clutch of the alternator.

In rare cases changing the belt can be the cause of a defective alternator. The slightly different belt tension can result in a different load on the alternator and freewheel clutch bearing which can cause bearing damage. However if this is the case the alternator and freewheel cutch bearings were on its way out anyway. Usually defective bearings generate a lot of heat which causes other (electrical) parts of the alternator to break down.
