Battery Light On/whining Noise

Featured Replies

Battery light came on other day and on acceleration and de-accelaration make a whining noise, kind of thinks its problies alternator gone but could be something else any advise welcome, had new belt fitted about a month ago at ford not sure if something not tightened up correctly

Does sound like the alternator has had it. Looking at the belt with the engine running, does it appear to be running ok? no slapping or anything out the ordinary?

There is a 90% chance the problems are caused by a defective alternator or the freewheel clutch of the alternator.

In rare cases changing the belt can be the cause of a defective alternator. The slightly different belt tension can result in a different load on the alternator and freewheel clutch bearing which can cause bearing damage. However if this is the case the alternator and freewheel cutch bearings were on its way out anyway. Usually defective bearings generate a lot of heat which causes other (electrical) parts of the alternator to break down.
