Glow Plug Tip Snapped

Featured Replies

When changing the glow plugs on my 1.6TDCI the tip has snapped off one of them and is stuck inside, seemingly welded in with carbon deposits.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Don't want to have the head off if I can avoid it!

try to clean off the crap without dislodging it then try a magnet to pull it out

a magnetic screwdriver that is has a strong magnetic pull might be of assistance

or a vacuum cleaner with the narrow attachment

think the abreviation N.F.C unfortunatly comes in force here. when they snap off like that, then even with the head off and using a pin punch/hammer they can be a nightmare to get out.

you may be the lucky one to get it out though, good liuck

Would he require a machine shop to get it out,

Or will the head need to be removed,

While the had is off give it a spring clean in there maybe get the head checked too

Jamie

might be worth ringing a local machine shop that does cyl head repairs/rebores/cranks etc to ask advise and if there is a way of extracting in place, tricky bit is getting all of it out and none dropping in to cyl head, then it head off time.

Thats for the replies everyone. I've had a few quotes between £700-£800 to take the head off and get it bored out, which I presume 90% of that is labour costs dismantling everything!

Does that sound reasonable? Either way the car is only worth about £1500, so I might take the risk of getting some tools and seeing if I get lucky getting it out myself.
