Focus Power Steering Fluid

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 2005 1.6 petrol focus and earlier on today I began repairing a leak on what I thought was a coolant hose. Turns out I misidentified the hose and it was actually for the power steering system. I discovered this when I removed a faulty hose clip for replacement. As you can imagine, as soon as I disconnected the clip and separated the hose, I lost all the power steering fluid from the reservoir. This isn't a massive problem as I have been meaning to get round to replacing the fluid anyway. I obviously can't run the car with no power steering fluid so as soon as I realised my mistake I went out and purchased a bottle of carlube red power steering fluid. I am however a little hesitant to put it in the vehicle incase it isn't exactly the correct specification. Can anyone advise me on whether or not this fluid is likely to be ok? I'm worried that the use of it may lead to a whole host of further problems.

The mk2 focus DOES NOT USE the red so do not put that in. It uses the green colour. The red is a lot thicker and will slowly damage it. Return it and get the green coloured one. It is more expensive as red is basically automatic transmission fluid.

Oh dear. Unfortunately I have already used the red fluid out of desperation as I had to get the car back on the road for Monday morning. I have however ordered two litres of proper ford fluid to the correct specification and I will be giving the system a proper flush through. The soonest I can do that will be Saturday. I just hope the system isn't too damaged by then, although the car is likely to cover about 250 miles in that time. Fingers crossed.

on a related note, does it ever need replacing?

I cant remember ever seeing it on a service list

It's not really a regular service item, only ever changed it through necessity of a replacement steering part myself.

Some Ford's like to boil their fluid (mk6 fiesta especially) so it's a good idea to change it.

On your car however, its not known to have a boiling issue so shouldn't have any issues :)
