Gearbox / Clutch Whine

Featured Replies

Just wanting to run something past the good folk here as usual!

I had a new clutch fitted a year ago thats got 6k on it.From the day it was fitted for the first 5 mins or so there was a slight whine which would stop when i pushed down the clutch pedal.I just got used to it and has not caused any issues with gear change etc.But past three days getting a bit of a high pitch whine which is intermitent.I need to get a service done so took it to the garage today who had a listen but said they could not hear much wrong then sods law 5 mins after i left hear this whine. There is no clunking or metal on metal type sound but getting very worried as i have had to pay out a large amount on medical bills this month and starting to really worry gearbox bearing might be on way out . Clutch did seem to stop the noise when depressed but now seems to be happening even without the clutch depressed.

its a 2010 1.8 Zetec S . Just wondering if worst comes to worst anyone any ideas on the cost of a fitted recon gearbox these days?

Thanks guys.

Have you had the gearbox oil changed?

That may help along with some gearbox oil additive like STP.

Hi Clive,

Was changed last year when the new clutch was put in!Wasnt expecting this from a 46k car :-(

Try topping up the oil and add STP first and if this doesn't settle the noise down then suspect a bearing.

Does it do the same in reverse too?

Have to admit i havent really tried it in reverse Clive. Will check that in the morning.Would that point towards something if it didnt?

Rereading your first post and something occurred to me - clutch release bearing.

When they changed your clutch did they replace this too?

You are up late Clive !!!!

I am not sure if he did or not mate.I hope it is something within the clutch as i cant afford a grand or so at the moment on a gearbox! Got to admit though sadly the vids on youtube the whine sounds like a lot of the gearbox ones but hope it would be that.Trying to think of a way to describe the whine. It is mid to high pitch.Actually sounded slightly like a belt but know that it is not :-(

Up late due to a painful torn shoulder muscle / ligament that painkillers aren't helping plus I'm a bit of a night owl anyway.

Hoping the Diazepam kicks in soon so I can sleep. 😪

Does the noise go as you depress the pedal and come back as the clutch engages or constant while driving?

Just with the pedal will be clutch bearing, constant will be gearbox.

!Removed! hell mate, that sounds awful!Hope it hurrys up and repairs but i know with health issues it is never fast enough!!!! Get better soon mate, and no playing darts with that arm!

It did seem to go away when clutch is pressed down but did hear it very slightly today while clutch was pressed in so thats not a good sign. But i took it to garage guy who briefly looked under the bonnet and said it all sounded normal to him which lasted 5 mins then was back.

While driving does seem to be when accelerating or reducing speed fairly constant but goes when i push in pedal usually....bit hit and miss.

Hi Jon Bhoy, I have a ford focus 1.8 zetec sport as well mine also makes a whining noise from the clutch which goes when the clutch is pushed in.  I am on the original clutch.  Mines done 56k. Drives fine just a bit clunky if i am rough with the clutch engagement which i know from driving another focus is a common issue.  My last focus had a similar issue I ran it until 110k it was ok.

Also the ib5 gearbox is quirky and tends to whine a little anyway. Both focuses ive had and my wifes fiesta have whined a little especially in 1st gear.

Many thanks for your input Jonathon.Really appreciate it.Had the car a year and was always a slight whine but this has got a bit more prominent in the past week. While driving today pushed in clutch and the sound disappeared.Does seem loudest in 1st and 2nd.I am putting the car in on wednesday to be looked at so will report back after in case it can help anyone looking in the future.

Sorry Clive to be a pain but are you saying if i push the clutch pedal down and the whine disappears then its more than likely the clutch ? The whine as i say does disappear when i press the clutch down and comes back once i take my foot off the clutch.Tried it while driving too and with clutch in no whine.

Hope shoulders a bit better today mate.

Probably clutch release bearing then.

Bearing noises in a clutch system are easily distinguished by running a few simple tests-

  1. Start the engine and leave the gearbox in neutral.
  2. If the gearbox makes noise when it is in neutral, it is usually a worn input shaft bearing.
  3. Depress the pedal until the clutch just engages.
  4. This is the point where the release bearing is just contacting the pressure plate fingers.
  5. If you begin to hear a squealing sound, this is likely a worn release bearing.

Suspect the pilot bearing if a whirling noise is present only when the clutch pedal is fully depressed.

Cheers for that Clive. Its looking like number 2 sadly . Its not a deafening whine but it is there.Been looking about and says its not really an emergency right now and many folk seem to be able to continue driving for a good few thousand miles until you can hear it has got a lot worse. Will see what the mechanic says wednesday but fearing the worse now.So if anyone wants a kidney check on ebay as i will be selling one to fund a new gearbox!

Just a quick follow up.Had a full service and guy after asking him to take it for a test drive and him not doing so topped up the gearbox oil . It helped a little and the whine is hardly noticeable apart from coming down in revs in 1st and 2nd.But did ask him to look at the clutch and he said he could not hear anything when it was clear as day sound wise . So for the time being ill keep an ear out but noise has eased.

Did also after have to go get all four tyres replaced and having bought the car with two Zetas that were losing tread on inside and Goodyears on the back which had lost shaped i put Goodyear Efficient Performance 225/40/18 all round but for the first time had 4 wheel alignment carried out...wow what a difference!!! Was a bit pricey but worth it for good tyres and proper balancing and alignment! Will put this part in a seperate post.

But wanted to say thanks to Clive and Jonathon for their input.Appreciated the help gents.
