priming fuel filter 1.4 tdci

Featured Replies

Hi i decided to change my fuel filter and cant get the air out the lines and the fuel primed

is there any cheap tool i can get to suck the fuel from the tank as it has been drawn back with air getting in.

just called my breakdown and they told me because my car is at home they would charge me £100

but if i was three quarters of a mile away from home they would do it for nothing lucky i have a steep road down hill that is a few miles long

.......

You seem to have an early 1.4, does it not have a priming bulb to the left of the air filter?

  • Author

yeah it does

even if the filter was empty when i fitted it and i pumped the primer long enough should it pull fuel into the fuel filter from the tank

i dont think that would work not sure but i only managed to fill the new fuel filter 3/4 with the diesel then try and prime it with the priming pump.

needless to say that did not work i could not get pressure with pumping the primer pump and i spent a hour trying.

i have a strange air leak and i suspected it was the fuel filter if i left the car for a day air would get in fuel lines and draw the fuel back to the

tank

but this air leak would only happen once a month thats why i only suspected the fuel filter as i had driven 50 miles on sunday

after the priming the pump and the car running fine.

only when i leave it over night it will get the air leak in the fuel if i stop for a few hours and the car starts fine

but this is before i changed the fuel filter got a good one from euro car parts so need to pressureize the fuel lines

so i can start the car and let it sit to see if the fuel filter is the fault.

then i can rule out the fuel lines

Hand pumps cost about a fiver I think.

You can try filling the new filter with diesel if you haven't got a pump, it's not ideal though as you'll be turning over for a while!

I changed my fuel filter the other week as part of the annual service (Mann from ECP) and the priming bulb was perfectly adequate to purge the air out of the lines and fill the empty fuel filter. Started fine and not had problems since. It took a few minutes of pumping at most, nowhere near as long as an hour.

It is a known issue, air leaks in the fuel lines, especially in the pipe that runs across the top of the injectors under the air filter box. Definitely sounds like you have a leak somewhere. A fix I've seen on the web is removing the section of pipe where the suspected leak might be, and running it inside another section of pipe of a larger diameter, covering the hole.

When using the bulb, you just gotta keep pumping until the bulb goes firm at which you can squeeze and hold for 10 seconds. You can see the air bubbles moving along in the curved clear section of pipe directly under the bulb (or under the air box to the filter)

thanks for the info i have been trying to find fuel lines from the scrappies but the ones on ebay that have them expect me to pay £40

for a hose to the fuel filter i did not realize they had celebrity scrappies but yeah there on ebay LOL

i created a thread to find if there is compatable lines for the fiesta 1.4 tdci from other cars

does anyone have any idea if i took the car to a garage they would cut fuel lines and do them with clips or they would only order the ford parts

The primer lines are quite cheap on Ebay brand new, I had a few issues priming mine, it never really feels like its priming correctly, basically keep pumping the bulb, give it a quick spin over, then prime it a bit more. I have an aftermarket air filter on mine so I can see the feed line to the pump, it had quite a few bubbles in it and took a while to clear through.

I would also check the connections on the fuel filter to ensure that they are all 100% air tight - and make sure that the in and out are the correct way round!

Give the hand pump about 20 pumps, spin it over for about 5 seconds, then pump another 20 times and try again.

Also, you really don't want to get a used line as when they get older they start to degrade and get pinhole leaks in them (causing more starting issues).

I am guessing the car was 100% running fine before the filter change?

I didn't realise the 1.4s already had a hand primer....why didn't they fit one to the 1.6s!?

If you can't get pressure up with that then there's a problem somewhere.  It might be the one way valve in the primer itself has failed if there are no other air leaks.

it did have a air leak that would happen about once a month i would prime the fuel pump leave it a day car would start no problem.

with it happening just once every month i did not think it was the fuel lines but the fuel filter. '''had the car 10 months dont how old is the filter is

but started happening every other day only on sunday i had to prime it for 5 min's then started first time and i drove 25 miles no problem

so i am still diagnosing the problem i will get a fuel pump today and try to get the fuel filter full off diesel

nobody on here has any advice on the fuel lines that go to the fuel filter i need to replace the one that runs to the left of the fuel filter

is there anybody here that tell me what i need to replace it with i have been to a mechanic about this issue

and intend to take the car back to him but i need a replacement hose.

problem i have i phoned my breakdown because the car is outside my flat i would get a £100 charge

the car needs to me 3/4 mile away from my flat to get the free service.

so today i either buy a tow rope or a fuel pump to move the car a mile away and call my fee breakdown service and get it to a garage.

or buy a pump that will probably not even fit the fuel line or work.

but that still leaves me to get a fuel line that i cant find anywere

i cant put the filter the wrong way round as the nut that has the water drain sits to the right and the screw to hold it goes in left.

Any fuel hose the right diameter and rated for diesel should work?  Why does it need to be specific?

That isn't the correct line and will leak air as its rubber, should be the correct quick connectors - very easy to swap over and easy to get to - perhaps try and loosen off that pipe and retighten it further onto the barb as a temporary fix.

i have looked at the haynes manual and the other end goes to the fuel pump but i dont know what the connection on the fuel pump size is

or where it is because someone bodged a too short hose on the filter i cant guess what the other end of the connection is like

but i cant see where the pipe goes i do know it goes way back past the direction of the fuel tank but i cant get under the car during the day because other cars park around my car where i stay

forgot to say the person who bodged the fuel line has left no give what you see in the picture thats how far it will go on

there is no give thats why i need to replace that hose i just noticed it when i started getting air leaks.

but i though i had a leak in the injectors because i got the tapping sound when i found the crap hose job i tightened up the clip

and no more tapping injector sound

as you can imagine i was well impressed but thats why i wanted a standard replacement hose.

they are just clip on no cutting required but i dont know what is on the other side of that hose thats short on the fuel filter.

i need to get under the car first

would prefer to just take it to a garage though

Might be worth Googling the part to see if you can ascertain what the pipe looks like, I am guessing it would be a short bit of pipe with the quick connectors on each end with one end going to the filter and the other to a hardpipe which then leads to the tank. My car is out in the carpark at the moment so can't quickly get to it but will try and see if I can get something posted up tonight with my stock setup.
