Ford KA 1.3 2004 Overheating Temperature Light, & No Cold Air Fix: Heater Control Valve, Coolant Flush, Thermostat Housing

Featured Replies

I bought KA off a housemate. Its done just over 140k.

He said it had over heating problems

I let the engine run for 20 mins and noticed that the fan did not kick in

I replaced the temperature/coolant sensor and now the fan works

Then, I drove the car for a 13 miles on local, A roads and motorway.

The temperature warning light came on

I borrowed an ODBII diagnositics module (ELM 327) which plugs into the inside of the car on the passenger side

Then installed a free OBDII compatible app (Torque Lite) on my android phone to monitor the temperature

I made the following observations:

1. Fan kicks in at 100 c

2. Temperature warning light comes on at 120 c

Once the temperature reached 120 c, I switched on blower/fan heater inside the car on maximum

3. The fan stopped at around 96 c

At this point, I switched the engine off to see how quick it would cool down

4. After 30 mins, the temperature went down to 81 c

I noticed that the blower blows out hot air even on cold setting.

I have not noticed any leaks

The coolant level has remained the same

Possible fixes ?

Flushing the coolant ?

Replacing the heater control valve ?

Replacing the thermostat / housing ?

Any advice on what else I could check before spending any more money or in what order I should do things.

Thanking you in advance,

Kam

HCV is gubbed for sure its one of th emost common posts on here - just check further down the posts on here.

After replacing the HCV , I would also do a full system coolant flush as a matter of course anyway and put in some antifreeze of course.

Check the water pump as well.

140k is a lot of miles so I would check just about everything lol

I have seen replaced HCV priced from £10 online to £30 from local car parts store. Can anyone recommend £10 one that has not let them down.

I've seen bad reviews for Holts coolant flush. The Wynn brand has more positive reviews.

Not sure how to check the water pump but I read somewhere to check see if it is freely rotating. If it rotate freely, then its faulty, if it does not move freely, then its ok. It should only rotate when engine is running.

I have uploaded a youtube video of what I think is the water pump.

I've also uploaded another video in case the sounds coming from the engine bay give any clues.

Here are description quoted from my youtube videos:

" I made this video in hope that a mechanic might be able to tell from the sound. After 15 minutes, I touched the thermostat housing hose and found it was really hot. The top hose on the radiator was cold. The hose connected to the coolant tank was hot. The heater control valve hoses were both hot.

Currently the temperature warning light comes after 20 mins running. It did not come on for the duration of this video but the radiator fan did.

BTW, radiator fan was not working. After reading forum, I disconnected the temperature and found the fan to be working all the time. I then replaced the temperature sensor and fan works properly now.

The only other fault I've noticed is that it blow hot air in the inside, even when you have setting on cold. I have told this is possibly a faulty heater control valve."

I've also taken photos that anyone can edit to help me identify part of the car that I need to check etc...
