Need some advice about in car PS2

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am driving to France to watch Euro 2016 with a few of my mates. To save their boredom I have borrowed an old portable DVD player which comes with twin screens ( Centurion DVA-320S2) to stick in the back. The power consumption for the unit is 15W according to the tech specs and it comes with a plug to go into the 12V socket so that won't be a problem. My confusion is that I wish to also plug a PS2 into the DVD player so they can play games (most likely FIFA!) along the way, I did initially want to plug an Xbox 360 into the car but have read that this may be a bit too powerful for the 12V socket! I know that I need to buy a power inverter to plug the PS2 into to power it but I am unsure what size inverter is required. I am a bit of a novice when it comes to electrics so looking for some advice!

My questions are:

- What size inverter is required and what sort of power does a PS2 draw?

- I only have one 12V socket. I do have a socket splitter to split the socket into two so that I can plug the DVD player and the PS2 into it. Would this be ok or could this overload the cigarette lighter socket? Is there a second 12V socket somewhere?

My car is a 2007 Ford Focus MK2 if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum,

You have most definitely come to the right place 👍

I have had a PlayStation 2 slim fitted to the govebox with controller extension cables

fed under the carpet resulting in a socket being under the drivers and passengers seat for plugging in the joypads when in use.

The PlayStation 2 slim runs at 8.2 volts making it ideal for vehicle install.

The focus mk2 and mk2.5 glovebox is big enough to house the console.

May I suggest scrapping the headrest screens though, see my guide to fitting a 10.1" HD Flip down monitor would be much better for games and DVD

I once had the screens which plug in to the 12v socket and the problem you will have is fluctuations in power supply will cause the DVD to skip and switch off quite frequently to the point where you literally couldn't be bothered switching it back on again.

The 12v sockets are fed via the altinator which fluctuates in supply,

Ideal option is to feed it directly from the better with an inline fuse of course.

Also see my guide to fitting a 12V socket in the boot of your focus,

You can mount the PlayStation to the parcel shelf with some Velcro strips and run it via the boot compartment 12v socket when required.

There are 12V plug adaptors available on eBay to power the ps2 via 12v socket.

Thanks for the reply, very interesting stuff. I will stick with the dvd player and twin screens for now as I have borrowed them for the journey, think I will have a look in the future though as it certainly looks good!

I have the "fat" PS2 and looking at the power requirements on the back it requires 50W so I have ordered a 150W inverter with an additional USB port so that they can charge phones etc in the back without having to worry about the inverter cutting out.

I am planning on installing the additional 12V socket in the boot but if that doesn't go as plan (i'm not great at electrics!) is it ok to use a splitter so that I can plug two plugs into the one 12V socket. The two plugs would be going to the 50W PS2 and one to the 15W DVD/screen unit. Will this be ok for the one socket or will this overload it?

I also have a couple of questions about the 12V socket install. Do I have to install a fuse or is the wire in the car already fused? Is there a specific earth point I have to earth to or is any stud ok?
