What is this, it often makes a strong tapping noise. Annoying!

Hi, could somebody tell em what this is (picture of plastic orange box/thing attached).

Sometimes (at least daily) when i am stationary, i hear a rather strong tapping sound, and can feel this through my pedals - main the brake. Sometimes this tapping is faint, sometimes very loud, and there are periods where this tapping is non-existant. Ive narrowed it down to this plastic orange tub as ive checked under the bonnet quite a few times and sometimes it is still and sometimes shaking like crazy. When it is shaking, i stop it with my hand and this stops the tapping - resulting in me believe this is the actual cause.

I have a Ford Fiesta 1.0L Zetec S Ecoboost 125bhp registered may 2013 - pic attached.

Also, please see second picture attached, it is taken under the passenger footwell and its really annoying as it keeps falling down

Sorry for the extremely noobish terms and questions here - had my Fiesta a month and these two things are putting me off.

Cheers

The orange tub is the coolant reservoir for the radiator & engine.

Try wedging it with some corrugated card or foam as a temporary measure. But it can get hot on a long run, so this is not a good long term solution.

It has probably been lifted up out of position for some servicing, and the lazy goon of a mechanic did not fit it back properly. It can be a bit fiddly.

(don't damage it, or drill holes to mount it, it is pressurised when car is hot!)

On my car, some metal lugs go through loops or slots in the side.

Do not know about the other bit. Is the fuse box down there? Again it may not have been replaced properly.

Do be aware that although you can stop the noise by holding the reservoir it doesn't quite mean that the reservoir is actually making the noise. It could be for example one of the hoses or pipes going to the reservoir that is actually making the noise (and that might give you a few more options concerning how you stop the noise).

The 'other' bit is the cover for the fusebox and should have two plastic clips that you rotate to hold it in position!

Cheers guys for the response, hugely appreciated...

Is it worth me getting a garage to take a look at it? Its just so so annoying. Yeah i was wondering it could be one of the hoses/pipes going to the reservoir. A friend did tell me to wedge it however i would ideally like a permanent/long term fix.

In terms of the 'other' bit, should i definitely have these two plastic clips? Are these attached to this scruffy piece of carpet?

Cheers

Trying various short term fixes (wedging) will at least help to pin down the problem better.

I presume you have tried moving the reservoir about to see if it is securely held in place, and looked for loose pipes that have come out of their clips or fastenings?

One problem is, sounds in an engine bay can be deceptive in location. A rubber hose can be used as a stethoscope. Just do not let it get tangled in the aux. drive belt!

Garage is one answer, if you have one you can trust. Some just replace expensive bits that may not be the problem, at your cost .

The 'Other' bit  if you look on the other side of it you'll see that it houses the bluetooth/Ford Sync module. It clips in under the glove box with 2 clips on either side of the light footwell light and the back of it slots into a metal slot at the back, the bit that slots in is quite weak if its incorrectly positioned which is why it'll drop down.

Thanks again fellas for your input, again its much appreciated..

Okay so im gonna trial wedging the coolant reservoir and see how it goes, and also try and see if it will reposition.

Now im more fixated on this passenger footwell issue, no matter what i try it just simply wont stay up and keeps falling down. - added more pics so you can see behind and also how im sitting it. Please help, i feel something else should be here

Cheers

The Way I get mine to stay on is the middle bit sits underneath the metal part and the edge bits sit on top of it, so like the metal is in between, does that make sense? If not I'll get a picture for you

Ive tried that variation you mention but its just no use, worse even, its so weak. I checked out my brothers car and his is firmly in place and would take a bit of effort to pull down...

Yeah I noticed mine seems quite weak as well but luckily hasn't dropped down yet.

Is you car still in warranty? Could get it to a ford dealer and see if they'll replace it. Can't imagine it's too difficult, all it holds is the bluetooth module
