Cambelt

Featured Replies

Hi all I'm going to change cambelt on my focus 18 tdci climate. 07 do i need special tools thanks

Yes, for sure.

(I presume your car is 1.8TDCI, mk2 (2007)).

Tools to set & hold the crankshaft & camshaft, possibly special puller, and an engine support bar or frame. Haynes does give a reasonable description.

I looked at doing it on mine, gave it to the garage in the end, even though it set me back £300 or so.

So if you don't move cam and crank just take belt off I presume it will be same when you put new belt on and also mark pulleys up?

Do not do it without the right tools as Tdci-Peter said.

I believe that it is almost impossible to avoid movement during the process.

And one experienced mechanic (I think it was iantt) was absolutely adamant about markings not being good enough. (Just seen Ian's answer, "marking possible on 1.8", and if he says so, that would be good enough for me! But sounds like great care is needed.)

That is the general view, so be warned!

Haynes does give details of how to make the shaft holding tools, they are quite simple, a modified bolt, and a little plate with bolts, I seem to recall. Though a lathe would be useful to make them. Have a good google to see if details come up, or get hold of the Haynes or similar book.

Add 1.8 exception.

On the 1.8 tdci you can get away with marking the pulleys but not ideal. but not other ford engines which peter was refering to .There are tools to line up correctly.

Job Takes about 30 mins if your doing it by marking pulleys.

This is all assuming your only doing the cam to injection pump belt

Hi,

According to the Haynes Joke book (as some call it, though it has its uses!), there is no need to remove the cambelt to change the pump on the 1.8TDCI.

Apparently you will need to support the engine, remove the engine front mount & raise it by 20mm. This is after removing the cambelt cover, and before undoing the pump bolts.

Yes you can change water pump without removing cambelt.
