Respray Help (Insurance Query)

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I have currently sorted my car out, starts and runs fine now. However I have major OCD and after washing my car yesterday I went absolutely nuts in my mind, The amount of chips, dents, scratches flaked areas and blisters was horrifying.

So i decided you know what I have a compressor and a spray gun I shall repaint it.

I pulled some of the dents out gonna have to fill some of the smaller ones i reckon. I have also decided to go with the Mk6.5 face lift lights and a new rear and front bumper design. Saw the scrappy had a couple of ST's so snagged the bumpers both for 40 quid with all the trim and fog lights :D got the lights for 20 quid as well so all is good :)

Now i did all of this and realised wait a second this is first car what will a complete respray do to my insurance. I checked and it says something to do with non-standard respray. What does that even mean. I mean black, silver and any other colour is standard in my eyes.

Could someone please enlighten me on what they mean by non standard respray? oh also what colour should i go for?

Cheers Guys

Ryan

If you're respraying the same colour it's a repair,  not a modification so you don't need to declare.

If it's a different colour you need to tell insurance and DVLA. Not sure how much insurance would charge - if anything,  though.

Awesome thank you for your help. I would love to respray it the same colour but the car is moondust silver and there are so many variations its unreal. I mean if i could colour match it 100% i would but the company said by the time I sanded and prepped all the areas that needed doing you may as well save some money and respray the whole car. I am not too keen on silver but if it saves me money I am okay with that :)

Any ideas though how to make a dull colour shiny. I painted the wing silver with paint from halfords (they say colour match but not anywhere near the same) and it looks matt effect even after using a clear lacquer? Do i need to cut into it with some polish stuff or something. Sorry I am not a car detailer XD

Cheers

Got disaster written all over it mate (no offence!) if its a 2003 car (going by your profile) you'd probably be better just keeping as it is, most people won't really notice chips etc if there not to severe, obviously you know where they are. By the time you add up all the parts, materials, paint set-up etc not to mention hassle and work it'll likely be more than the value of the car, and it won't affect the trade in value (if anything you'll get less as the job will be (by the sounds of things) highly unprofessional.

Stick the parts you've bought on gumtree or something you might get lucky and get your money back.

Give the car a good waxing etc regular and focus more on mechanical cost-effective servicing and mechanical maintenance for a car at that age, as opposed to cosmetic and you should get another year or two from it. Chances are you could respray but the gearbox or clutch or wheelbearings etc could go shortly...

In that case i will do that thank you. The car itself has only done 66k miles anyway and i dont plan on keeping it forever lol. Its really just so i can get my car insurance premiums down somewhat :)

Dont have a clue what i will be buying next though.

So your advice leave the car as it is and just drive it XD

Sounds like a money saver

Cheers Mate
