Clunk when accelerating

Featured Replies

125 ecoboost titanium (2013), bought second hand from a dealer. They MOT'd early (the car turns 3 in September); so still under warranty.

Occasionally the car will make a bit of a 'clunk' when accelerating or moving off. Doesn't happen when at speed and is only really noticeable with radio low or off. The dealer had a shock absorber replaced as it had a 'light misting of oil' in the MOT as an advisory. The other shocker hasn't been replaced though I've been planning to get it done anyway ( I read its best to get them done in pairs ). I've had the tracking & balancing done since noticing the issue, but forgot to ask the guys to check the shock absorber.

I'm wondering if anyone's had a similar issue or have any ideas of possible causes so hopefully the dealer figures out what's causing it when I get it booked in? I'm suspecting shocker, but that the noise only seems to happen on acceleration I'm concerned it might be something else. I haven't done any mods, but I think the previous owner might have ( one window had heko clips in it, dashcam adhesive mount was still on the inside of the car; car looks as low as a ZS and that's just what I've found so far)

I've linked a video of the noise (can hear it at 00:24 , 00:29,  00:58) and pics of the shockers.

Check your front springs! On the lower mounting section of the strut.

Front springs are prone to snapping on the Fiesta.

I had a clunk a couple of years ago on a 2009 Fiesta and both front springs were broken very close to the bottom.

My 2010 started to do the same 'clunk' in late 2013 early 2014, Ford said the base of my springs are really corroded and the noise will be coming from there and they advised me to get them renewed, this year the driverside went ''BANG'' and the spring snapped at the rusty part, it had sheared right off

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I've had a quick look and seems a bit rusty - reckon it's them that are the problem?

Just a note on the side - did you say that this was a 2013 car? Its got more rust on the shocks than my '04 plate mk6!

These are bad aren't they! :w00t: the struts on my 10 plate was mucky but when I washed them down, they was lovely satin black!

If there is a problem the springs it will be hard to spot any fractured part as it will most likely be on the inside of the lower spring section where it butts up to the strut top.

This was one of my springs which snapped, prior to the clunking noise for a good time, then **BANG**

The really rusty part is where the spring begins to seat on the top of the strut and broken part started from underneath, a good C section of spring snapped on mine and the otherside wasn't looking too healthy neither, rusty but not as bad. Changed both springs and coated the lower base of the springs in grease, so it'll never rust again and best of all the clunking had gone....lol

Thanks for the info.  Out of curiosity - how much did doing both set you back?  Just in case dealer says it's not warranty item

£35 for a pair of standard Suplex springs. Son fitted my springs which took him just 3 hours to complete. If you have the correct tools it's fairly easy going.

When ford noticed the bad corrosion on my springs it was still under warranty but then told me the springs don't come under warranty like tyres & exhaust :wallbash:

I'd jack the front of the car up and take the wheels off, wash the springs & the top of the suspension, get them nice and clean and rotate the steering to full lock and look for any signs of imminent failure.

Not trying to frighten you but a broken spring can cause you to crash! Not by the suspension dropping but by the broken bit which can be thrown out as it shears and in some cases has actually acted like a huge claw, ripping into the side of the tyre causing an instant blow out, this happened to a friend who re-designed the front of the car by railings

Nice to see that Ford build quality has improved over the years....Not called "Fix Or Repair Daily" for nothing.
