High Pitched Whine Ecoboost 1.0l

Featured Replies

Here in mainland Europe the weather has suddenly got quite nice so the aircon is on in the car quite a lot. Anyway, I have noticed that again (like last year) there is a high pitched whine that sets in when driving. I went to the dealer last year about this but when they tested it of course there was nothing... Has anyone else had similar problems? I gather it is related to the alternator.

I guess it might be belt slip on the aux belt - what sort of mileage is the car on?

Yeah could be slipping once AC is engaged (extra load on aux belt), now being used because the weather is good.

You can get some belt dressing spray that you can put on the belt, or indeed you could VERY carefully lightly run some sandpaper on the belt to remove the glazing.

Thanks for the tips. It seems more whiney now that the temperature here is about 23-26 degrees most days. The car is two years old and has done about 15km so slightly less than 10k miles. It's really used for sort commutes so around 20-30 miles per days kind of thing. Although I do plan to take it on a mini European tour soon, so I'd rather not have any issues.

I don't have the Ecoboost engine but perhaps it is also worth inspecting the belt itself, sometimes the aux belts can get contaminated with things like spilt oil or other greases which can also cause the squeak. I don't know if the belt is manually or automatically tensioned - the belt would have stretched slightly which means it might have loosend up slightly.

Does the belt squeek all the time or just on start up?
