Mondeo 1.8 TDCi judder/hesitation driving me crazy!

Featured Replies

Hello all, ive got a problem with the Mondeo that is driving me crazy.

There is a judder/hesitation, under light acceleration at around 1500-2200rpm. It feels like I'm adjusting the accelerator pedal slightly when it's actually pressed lightly & constantly. After about 2,200 rpm it pulls ok. It doesn't do it when the engine is cold which must be a clue to what is happening but when warm it does it in every gear and will do it at 70mph on the motorway in 6th. It's not smoking overly, ive just had the fuel filter changed and there were no fault codes.

Any thoughts before I go back to the garage would be great, thanks!!

I had similar symptoms (rather intermittent) on my Focus 1.8TDCI. I think it is same engine.

It was the EGR valve playing up. After some while (months), the error light came on, with EGR DTCs.

You could try blanking the EGR (few quid off EBay), That cured the hesitation on my car.

Blanking by itself does not put the light on on my engine, but a faulty EGR does put it on, whether blanked or not.

I would strongly advise getting a scanner, there can be codes even if the light is not on (On EGR, and many other non-safety issues, it takes two DTCs before the light comes on.)

For an overview of diagnostics, See:

If it is the EGR, they are not too costly to repair now (less than £100, if it is only the electrical actuator part). I repaired mine, and have a guide about it, post here, (or search my posts) for more info if relevant.

That's great info Peter, thanks for the reply. I will try blanking the EGR, as you say its only a few quid so worth it. A scanner is probably a wise investment. I always dread going to a garage with an unknown/intermittent fault as costs can soon get out of hand!

Any results?

I ask because someone else has a very similar sounding fault.

Apologies for the 2 month slow reply! But yeh blanking the EGR seems to have smoothed things out and I haven't seen/felt any drawback so it's definitely worth doing for anyone with similar symptoms.

if its a 1.8 you can repair it for a fiver, thought personally I repaired mine for a tenner.

Two blanking plates, one bottom end, and one top end, fitting between the engine and the EGR pipe, spot on. My EGR pipe killed itself, vibrations ripped the top half off, so for a tenner I repaired it, gave it a good deal of power back and much better in every possible way....
