Mk4 mondeo estate rear lights confused

Featured Replies

Confused can anyone shed some light on this matter. Own mk4 mondeo titanium x sport estate. 2 light clusters on rear each side. Per side there are 2 bulbs on wing and 3 bulbs on tail gate. Confusing bit is there are 2 twin filament bulbs on tail gate light cluster which on operating all lights Inc tail brakes fogs and reversing only 1 filament gets used in one of the bulbs all other bulbs appear to work fine. Can anyone shed a full explanation for the rear bulbs so i may find the fault. I wonder if it should be an additional stop signal as there is only the wing brake light working.

Tail gate cluster is listed (in 2009 Feb-Sep owners manual) as: Reversing, Tail & Fog. See pic.

The bulb spec gives 21/5 as the Fog bulb. Seems the 5W filament is not used.

(Brake and Tail is also a 21/5)

Does the high mounted brake lamp on the tailgate work? If not check wiring & connectors to tailgate.

Hello Glenn, does your car have (or did have) a tow bar fitted ?

and I think your car only has one rear fog light on the drivers side, the one on the passenger side is normally just a dummy.

Hello Brian, how many bulbs you have depends on which year/which model and if it is a saloon (4 door), hatchback (5 door) or Estate.

Tail light only bulbs are 5W  -  Brake light only bulbs are 21W  -  Indicator bulbs are 21W  -  Rear Fog bulbs are 18W but can be 21W on some models.

Combined bulbs: Stop (Brake) and Tail bulbs are 21W/5W  - Rear Fog and Tail bulbs are 18W/5W
