2009 1.6 TDCi Engine losing turbo

After some general advice, the cars done 120k now and probably needs some love.

 

An intermittent problem has come about with regards to what feels like losing the Turbo.

 

Scenario 1

Driving, home through town, minimal use of the turbo - but 'power' available when demanded.

 

Scenario 2

Driving home, minimal use of the turbo - but 'power' available when demanded whilst through town, join motorway constantly cough 80 cough all ok.  back off the power, put power on and flat nothing.  Like there is no turbo activity.

 

No warning lights on dashboard, appreciate its a bit cryptic but any thoughts as to what the problem could be



The 1.6 TDCi engine has many oil issues - if its not properly serviced the oil lines to the turbo get blocked and the turbo fails - look up 'DV6 issues'.

As David says, the DV6 (1.6TDCI) is prone to oil problems, changes at 5k to 6k miles are recommended.

Have a look inside the oil filler, and the dipstick, look for tarry black deposits. If any are found, avoid further use, get oil changed & pipe to turbo cleaned or replaced. If it looks ok, but is over 6k miles, also change the oil.

However there are lots of other things it could be. If the light is not on, there could still be error codes in there, and problems like you describe will cause the light to come on at some stage. The pcm will know the turbo is not working.

A basic scanner (like a U480) will show engine codes. A much more powerful Ford specific system would be Forscan.

So finally ford have diagnosed it.

 

New turbo and control solenoid.  However subsequently two solenoids have failed.

Ford are suggesting the ECU has failed...  Any thoughts?

Guessing you have also had all the turbo oil lines replaced as well rather than just the turbo?

Yuk!

The big question is why have two solenoids failed? And in what way?

I can only think that it is not rated for 100% duty (quite common), and in normal use should never see continuous battery supply, but here it is getting that, and overheating.

So either the ECU output has failed fully on, or something is making the ECU drive it with full power.

If the ECU has failed, it is likely the solenoid (& turbo) never worked after replacement. Intermittent faults are less likely here. It is quite possible that an original failed solenoid burnt out the driver in the ECU, but that should have been detected at the time, by the garage.

If looking for something else, an obvious candidate is the MAP sensor. This must be what the ECU uses to control the solenoid. I would very definitely monitor or test or replace that before the ECU.

Also I would test the ECU solenoid driver line, and confirm if it was faulty. Then I would try to locate and replace the faulty component on the ecu, for about £1 to £5 for a transistor. Replacing the entire ECU would be absolute last resort!

But of course the garage can't be bothered with any of that.
