Dash Cam Choices

Featured Replies

I am looking at getting myself a dash cam. Ideally I would like on as discreet as possible. I have seen loads of people with them dangling from the center of their windscreens with wires hanging every where, this is not a look I want to emulate

So fare I have go these on my wish list

Snooper DVR-1HD Mini HD

Garmin 1.4-Inch Dash Cam 30

Blueskysea Mini 0806 A7LA50

On Dash Camera Amacam AM-M86

Of all of these the snooper and the Garmin are more recognisable  to me , the snooper comes with a hard wiring kit. The other look to be similar versions of the same Chinese camera.

Anyone have a opinions on these cameras ? I am leaning towards the snooper at the moment but it does seem to have been around for 3 years  ?

If you want discreet, I highly recommend the Street Guardian SG9665GC.

Or if you are on  tight budget, the A118C, both use the same chassis.

Blackvue cameras are great for being discreet, we have them in 2 cars already and have been very pleased with them. I'll be getting one for my car at Christmas.

Only issue is there are cheaper alternatives out there but I had no idea what they're like.

The A118C does look nice, there are a lot of similar looking ones, do they do one with GPS ?

I am defo looking towards the budget end of things

The Blackvue does look good but a bit pricier than I would like

Yeah GPS is a separate module with a118c. You can usually buy them as a kit though.

I got the gps antenna for my cam which is basically an A118C and it just adds a speed reading to the screen which tbh is way too small to see in the normal position on the top of a windscreen and doesn't even record onto the video files.

It should record in to the meta data though, so you can add speed with software on to video feed.

The A118C B40 does look like a good option, being able to ad GPS to it might be useful. I am looking at all the reviews online at the moment. I Think you could leave it in the car unlike the other which are a bit more visible. At £50 it's a comfortable price.

The Street Guardian SG9665GC is a bit hard to find ATM

I have about 3-4 inches of wire 'dangling' as my dashcam is (or rather was) wired in, I still have no dangling as the wire is fed under the headlining and door rubber.

Mine is a nextbase 512g, and to be on the safe side in case of a filthy windscreen I read out numberplates these days

Just found some excellent software for viewing dashcam video-

https://dashcamviewer.com/

It shows the video alongside various windowed data such as speed/direction/lat & long/weather data, a speed/distance/bearing graph and a Google or Bing map trace with road or satellite overlay.

Perfect for complementing the A118C if you fit the GPS antenna.

Not tried that one, this was the one recommended by Street Guardian, so I've been using that:

Unfortunately, I've read that the developer passed away, but it still seems to work well if you switch the mapping to openlayers.

So after flitting away countless hours looking at reviews online I have come down to these 3

The A118 wins on price , the transcend has some interesting features but is a bit more obvious. The other M6+ looks good if the mount does not rattle.

I chose the A118 because it is discreet and the cable tidy is a good idea.

One thing with it is that the supplied sticky pads are super strong so be 100% sure of the fitting position and horizontal alignment before finalising as you won't be adjusting the location afterwards.

Mine is so very slightly off angle which warranted some cursing on my part.

Have you had any of the exposure problems shown in the review?

Most people are idiots, which is why they have wires dangling down everywhere.  Takes all of 3 minutes to tuck the wiring into the trim and therefore out of sight.

Avoid the 0806. Piece of unreliable tat.

I have the Transcend DrivePro 200.  In some ways it's a lot better than the DrivePro 220.  Principally because it has a transistor and not a battery.

Recently posted brief reviews of both of these cameras:

I am now also looking at the nextbase 312gw, not as discreet but the mount looks like it is easy to get off the mount.

After much thinking I went for a next base 212, all good so far.

However one thing I should have seen coming is that the big black housing that holds the rain sensor is visible and obscures some the frame if you have the camera next to rear view mirror. Pondering what to do ATM.
