Break disks Worn?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

While walking to my Ford focus today I noticed that my break disks look slighly rusty on each side (see pictures). Is this normal? Or is this a sign that they are getting worn?

When breaking while driving the car stops in good time and I notice no squeeks or the car moving to one side.

Perfectly normal, the disks have an allowed wear (2mm in thickness if I remember correctly) but check your brake pad thickness. If that's around 3mm I'd get new pads and I'd just change the disks while I'm at it.

If you think yours look bad, the below photo shows how bad one of mine were on the inside face! (I renewed mine a month ago)

owner was complaining of a noise from the front.

I once wore through the brake pad lining forcing the pad to be ejected from the caliper and buffing half the piston away, that was on a Vauxhall viva :)

a neighbour just drove past me in his 106, grinding and screaching as he braked , how many more out there the same?

Thanks alot mate! Put my mind at rest 😃

Whats the best way to check my break pad thickness? Can it be done without taking the wheel off?

Depending on which wheels you have you should be able to see through the spokes and look at the pads, failing that remove the wheel and you can see the pads through the calliper.

You ought to submit that to Haynes for inclusion to the next edition of Disc Brake manual, for their pages of horrors found:lol:

i found it on an mot website, apparently the customer mentioned he had a noise when he presented it for mot, this was found on inspection. scary to think the customer drove it to mot station.

did you see the pads made of wood i posted some time ago

transit brake pad manufactured by the owner out of wood,
