Urgent advise req'd - car steer shaking

Featured Replies

Hi guys, new to this forum so greetings to all!!!

Have an urgent inquiry and have been directed to this forum as many mechanics (including Trust Ford and SMC Ford) haven't been able to give me a proper response.

I have a 2008 Ford Mondeo Edge TDCi.

When I brake the steering shakes A LOT, to the point I sometimes feel I may lose control of the car. It also steers slightly to the left (but only slightly, it is more the shaking that concerns me).

SMC Ford said the brakes are fine, Trust Ford said it may be the rear trailing arm bushes which I had changed as well as tracking and balancing done. But none of this sorted the issue out. Maybe changing the tyres and rear trailing arm bushes sorted it for a month at most, but the issue came back again and worse.

I don't trust SMC Ford as they said they looked at the brakes and don't think that's the problem but I don't think they looked at them. Instead they are saying the rear tyres are unworn evenly which could be the issue. But would this make the steering shake so vigorously?

Please help as my wife drives our 9 month in this car and I don't feel happy letting her carry on driving it like this... I may be being a little dramatic but better safe than sorry.

I had something similar happen to my MK2 Focus when I had tyres changed. I put the front wheels in the back and my car wobbled/shook like a madman, turned out the wheel has buckled on the inside.

Have you have your alloys checked for possible bends/buckles?

I know you have the brakes checked but warped discs can also cause the shaking.

Sent from the pub with a pint in the other hand.

Firstly, can I just say here's to wishing I had a pint in both hands! Haha.

Thanks for your experience mate. I will get the tyres checked seems SMC may have been onto something as that's exactly what they said about my rear tyres (worn on the inside).

My Ford doesn't have alloys has hub caps (standard tyres, only the simple things in life lol).
