Cam belt Striped teeth.

Featured Replies

Hi, I have an 02 focus 1.6 Zetec. whilst coming up to a junction the engine stopped. having got her home and investigated there are no teeth left on the cambelt where it goes around the crankshaft pulley. having taken it off I can move both of the Cam shafts and the idler seems ok. I can only assume that the top end seized when hot? I have recently had a coolant leak but it was al fine when this happened. I would like a definitive answer whether this engine is interference or not as i am considering replacing the cam belt and checking the water pump. I dont really want to take the head off if i dont need to and can not see any signs of bent valves from above although I can turn both cam shafts all the way round with out any problem?

Any thoughts would be great

Thanks

Is it an original belt?

It is an interference engine too so there will be some valve damage.

I was thinking of trying a new cam belt just to see what happens?

Waterpump probably seized and stripped the teeth, had that a couple of times on Peugeot engines.

Probably need a new engine.

valves will definatly be bent.

As Stef said - interference engines result in valve damage, and likely piston damage. you are looking at an engine rebuild best case scenario.
