On-board computer/info button not working

Featured Replies

Hello! The info button of the Ford Mondeo Mk3 that I currently drive hasn't been working for a while, and it's about I get it fixed.

I'm talking about the button on the tip of the blinker lever, the one theme cycles through the on-board computer informations. It does not work. When pressed nothing happens, and sometimes, somehow, the computer cycles on its own.

I suspect it is a bad contact of the switch, but to be certain I need to get inside the lever. And here comes my question to you gurus: how can I open take off the cap of the button, or even the whole lever?

Thanks in advance!

Your not alone on this...mine sometimes does nothing, then works perfectly... definitely the contacts inside, but I'm too at a loss on how to fix, although I'm tempted to squirt some contact cleaner into the end button but not too much!!!

Yeah, that thing is locked tight! So tight that I doubt the contact cleaner would get to where it needs to.

Does anyone around here know how to disassemble the on-board computer lever?

So, I have new information on this topic.

Thanks to the information on this video and this video, along with some observation, I was able to completely disattach the turn signal lever from the vehicle. None of those videos is for te Mondeo mk3, but the information in the is still very useful, as the presented models are similar.

The turn signal lever is a complete module that detaches as a single piece. On the back of it there is a 10 pin connector. By checking the continuity between the pins while pressing the various buttons/lever options, I came up with the following diagram. It may not be 100% accurate as I did not test all of the possible combinations, but I think it is very to what it should be. (Pardon my paint skills, or lack of them). Here is the diagram.

On the left side is the connector on the steering wheel side. It has cables attached to every terminal except pin 9. Pin 5 is also the only one to be totally black, the other ones have striped patterns. On the right side is the connector on the turn signal module, along with what connection is observed. Pins 1, 2 and 3 are related to the turn signals. Pins 4 and 5 have a mini speaker between them, which is used to produce the turn signal sound. Pins 6 and 7 are related to the long distance lights. Pins 8 and 9 seemed to be connected when the  long distance lights were turned on, but since there is no  cable in pin 9 this connection is probably residual (not functional). When the Info button was pressed, there was a connection between pins 5 and 10. Since pin 5 is shared by two connections I believe it is a common ground pin.

After trying out these combinations on the lever a couple of times, the Info butter created the 5-10 connection every single time. However, if I manually connected pins 5-10 on the steering wheel side (by using a jumper cable), sometimes the trip computer toggled the display, others it did not. I further when on and tapped the wires after the steering wheel connectors (to check if it was the connector that had gone bad) but the result was the same.

I am still unable to identify the cause of the problem, but I can almost certainly say that the origin is in the signal path beyond the steering wheel, and not on the lever/button.

What could cause such a problem? Could it be a firmware fault?

I unpluged/plugged the battery back in during these tests. The trip computer reset as expected, but the button still did not work,

Hmmm...good one for the investigation, it's a bit strange that the actual button is not at fault but there you go....the mondy is now 11 years old so could be general age degradation... some days works perfectly.. on others it's takes a break!!
