rev counter eratic when coasting ford focus 2010

Featured Replies

Hi folks.

I have a 2010 ford focus zetec 1.8.

When stationary, the revs are perfect and does not move.. when driving normally rev counter is normal..

The problem starts when i am driving and I see an obstruction in the road like a traffic light etc and I drop it out of gear and coast.. the rev counter drops to 400rpm and almost cuts out then the engine revs itself to 3000rpm then drops instantly to 400rpm and yoyos up and down really fast until I put the car back into gear.

the car has still got warrenty and I have called the garage in question. When I told them about the problem, the guy said you should never ever coast in newer cars because it confuses the engine? I told him that this problem was not there when I first got the car 2 months ago but he just palmed me off and told me to stop coasting?

Can someone please help me out over here!

many thanks

The best place to start would be to use electrical contact cleaner on the mass air flow sensor.
