2010 Mondeo 1.8 Tdci stalling after starting

Featured Replies

Hi. New to the site so apologies if this has been discussed before. Problem is. My mondeo used to kind of stutter and jerk for a few seconds maybe when going 40-50 mph. Thats ok and i could live with it. Didn't happen a lot but occaionally. Lately though its now started stalling after starting. Get 20 feet and it dies and will sometimes not start. New filters etc in it and no fault codes. Im not mechanically minded so im lost and mechanic had car a few times and cant replicate and without codes he is kinda stuck. Any of you Ford genuises have any idea? Love the car but cant trust it now. Doesnt happen all the time just now and again. Help!!

Hi,

You could try blanking the EGR valve (plate is a few quid off Ebay, job is pretty easy: wipers off, 2 plastic panels off, two bolts on the inlet to the egr valve, insert plate & refit.) Faulty EGR can cause power dips, and stalls after start, but fail to re-start I am not so sure about.

Otherwise you either have to wait until it puts the EML on, with some hopefully helpful DTC. Or get a programme / App like Forscan or Torque and monitor fuel rail pressure, along with rpm, speed & accelerator position. This might yield some clue if there is a fuel supply problem.

Or it could be an electrical problem, lot of possibles there: Injectors, MAF, MAP, crank & cam sensors, bus errors. But most of these will cause DTCs & put the EML on. So less likely at present.
