08 Ford Focus 1.6 Style speedometer not registering correctly

Ford Focus 1.6 Style petrol, bought today. whilst driving back noticed the speedometer was not working correctly. firstly it didn't go past 56mph while going on the dual carriageway, also didn't seem to register while moving away. any ideas what this could be, no warning lights.
