DPF Problems

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I'm experiencing some problems with my Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI 2007.
Since I bought it, I had to deal with several problems and now it seems that the last one is related to the DPF.

The car has 79000 miles at the odometer and it had a new DPF the last year with a full DPF fluid refill. The garage who did the job wasn't a ford dealer and so there is a chance they put the wrong DPF fluid in it (it is brown instead of blue) and they didn't reset the counter properly.
The result is: the car is running without any problem, the DPF differential pressure is never more than 5KPa but I've got three errors on ForScan:
- P2459: DPF regeneration Frequency, maximum number of regeneration demands being reached.
- P1927 and P1932 that seem related to a low DPF level in the Fuel Additive Tank.

To me, it seems to be a problem related to the DPF counter and its resetting.
To do that, I'm thinking about getting a cloned VCM II from China and do the job on my own. I tried to drop the car off to a Ford dealer and they told me the problem could be the fuel pump and they would need a couple of working hours to be sure of it...which seems unlikely to me.

So, I have a couple of questions for you guys
- do you think the counter could be the problem of those errors?
- where can I find a good site to buy a good VCM II and the IDS? I found many Chinese sites but I'm not sure I can trust them.

Any help will be really appreciate since I have been dealing with this problem for a month and I don't have any clue.

The DPF DP should be zero, or almost so, when idling, and only rise to 5kPa under quite heavy engine load & highish rpm.

The car seems to think the DP is too high, or is not being reduced enough during a regen. This could be due to the wrong fluid, but the  P1927 & P1993 DTCs may stop the dosing from taking place.

I would thoroughly check the hoses from the DPF to the DP sensor, and test the sensor if possible. Leaks in those hoses are common, and give false readings.

It should be possible to reset the FACM using Forscan, to tell it that the additive tank is full. And that should clear those DTCs. But someone else is also currently having a problem with clearing those DTCs:

Re IDS, that is normally Ford proprietary software only available via an expensive license. Any other version may be suspect, and is probably an older copy. It may work, or not.

If the car had been used without Eolys for long enough to flag up regen frequency errors, then it is likely there is a build up of un-modified soot in the DPF, that will not burn off in a normal regen. It may be worth trying some of the DPF cleaner additives. These will not clear ash, but may help with soot build up. Forscan can also do a forced regen while stationary, though be warned it is very noisy!

I think I would try to get the DPF cleared first, checking hoses and /or using additives/cleaner & forced or normal active regens, as a new DPF is rather expensive. Then investigate the Eolys tank problem, as to why it thinks it is empty, and whether it has the right fluid.

You can run a forced regen and a code reset with a modified ELM Cable, and the FORSCAN software, you may find this helps.
