Alternator / fan belt

Featured Replies

Hi all at FOC.

I own a ford focus 56, 1.8 tdci. Which broke down Saturday shortly after the battery light coming on and the power steering failing. wouldn't start just a clicking noise. changed battery and all was fine until I got home from work Monday and it died again😣.

Could this be an alternator failure ?

Many thanks guys.

Richard.

Hope this helps I had this on my Astra turned out that the 10mm bolt had come loss on the back of my alternator that holds the wire in place tightend it back up and it was fine after that so I would check ur wiring first

Charging system/alternator needs tested.

Thanks for your comments guys. just had a bloke look at it with his meter and he reckons it is the alternator. but I think me and the haynes are going to try and change it myself. is it only the drive belt I need to remove or is there another belt I should worry about ?

Thanks alot . .

I've just chucked a working alternator from a 1.8tdci in my scrap pile lol.

Its just one belt that you can lock the tensioner in the off position with a pin. It's a little bit of a fiddle but by all means a little savvy, basic tools and patience it's doable by anyone

you'll notice the alternator sits in a bit and there is a shaft connecting it to the pulley which is driven from the belt. Dropping the aircon pump but not disconnecting the pipes is required.

@Stef123 thanks for your help mate! yes I've read that you should not disconnect the air con pipe. I'll do a bit more research to find out which one it is!

I'll let you know how I get on.

You can't miss the pipes from the aircon pump so don't sweat it. It's not a complicated job.
